Used HIS 4870 512 MB video card to replace my 9600 GSO 384 MB
Nice upgrade for me. My first ATI card EVER (been using Nvidia since the Riva 128 days). So far I'm impressed. Even though this card is known for high heat and a loud fan I have been able to easily control both with the manual fan control in ATI Overdrive and eVGA Precision. Fully stressed with P95 and FurMark running I see temps in the 80C range at 35% fan speed which is quiet but audible. While playing BC2 temps are only in the 60's at 35% fan. I might bump the fan to 40% while gaming. It starts to get a bit loud at that point but I can't hear it with my headphones on. When not gaming the fan runs at 30% which is just barely audible over my quiet case fans and keeps temps in the low 50's.
Speaking of BC2 - with my 9600 GSO I was getting frame rates in the 50-70 range at 1680x1050 with all HIGH video settings (except shadows on LOW) and no AA/AF. With the 4870 I get 100-110 fps with the same settings (on a full 32 player server of course). Setting 4xAA and 4xAF drops fps down to the 65-75 range. Excellent result IMO.
3dMark06 is up from 13000 (9600 GSO overclocked) to 16150 (4870 stock).
Only negative so far is power consumption. My AMD X6 1055t at 3.5 Ghz with the 9600 GSO (overclocked) idled at 135w and was 338w at full load (P95 & FurMark running). The 4870 (stock speed) is idle 173w (+38w) and load 435w (+97w). So far my Antec Neo HE550 is handling the upgrade fine.
