Why is PCPER recomending the EVGA 7900GT?

I bought the EVGA 7900GT based on PCPERs hardware leader board. I figured they would recomend the best right? Well I got a DOA card. no biggie, but then I went over to Evga's forums to look up info and what do I find???
There's a post there 8 PAGES long of people with Dead or Crippled cards. Some people with 2, 3 and 4 RMAs in to EVGA already and still no resolution. One guy had 8, count them, 8 EVGA 7900 cards in 8 different computers and they all had issues and had been RMA'd at least once. The rest of the forum is littered with hundreds of people that have problems with this card. Has EVGA ever heard of a recall?!?!? My god!

Why on Gods earth is pcper.com recomending this card?

I'm sorry but I don't trust your hardware leaderboard anymore. Either you're not doing the research I thought you were, or it's simply just a paid advertisement. Either way, I'll not be using it in the futer as a reference.

Re: Why is PCPER recomending the EVGA 7900GT?

i think that article came out a while ago, before most of the problems with these cards became apparent. im on my first rma, my original 7900gtx sc was dead after 2 days of use. they just sent me out my cross-shippment today. im pretty sure this one will be doa too. i frequent the evga forums and can't fathom how many people have been putting up with this BS.

Everyone is getting the X1900XT but me it seems . I dont know whats up with the 7900GT. I have a 7800GT and its been running at 470/1100 since Jan, with the occasional OC as i feel the need to but i always reset it back to stock speeds as it doesnt oc higher then 480/1201 (sure i could volt mod but i dont want to fry the card) and theres more of a heat gain then anything from it. But its been rock solid(knock on wood)so far. And would def recommend one of them to someone else. But im super dissapointed about the 7900GT being such a flakey card, i was going to get one but now im def going to wait for dx10.

I'm still baffled why people buy NVIDEA... I used to use NVIDIA and then their cards went to crap in the G4 series... switched to ATI... never had a problem... then I decide to try NVIDIA one more time and get burnt again. Ugh.

Re: Why is PCPER recomending the EVGA 7900GT?

never had any problems with any of my ATI or nVidia cards.

They have all been great cards.

the main reason I tend toward nVidia is for better Linux drivers.

My 7900GT works great, however I did read all the posts about the problems with it and bought a stock clocked card instead of a overclocked one.

the fans on my 7600GT and my 7900GT just plain sux though, they are too freaking loud! I wish Zalman would hurry up and release the VF100 (I need single slot cooling)

Well, I suspect that when they got their 7900GT to test/review - it worked fantastic.....just like my 7900GT CO did for about 2-3 months. It was AWESOME!.....then........(evil music queue)........bad things started happening.

So I was touting the card as well........it is great.......awesome, even, for 2+ months..now I wish I had just gone with my initial intentions.....a 7800GT. CRAP, stupid me.

My card from eVGA was not OC'd nor did I OC it. I am on my third card right now and its also faulty.

Like TheDrake said, they work phenominally at first, but it seems to be only a matter of time before they deteriorate.

Ok, I have to make something clear here... I'm NOT talking about the 7900 GT review. I am talking about the PCPER Leader board where they suggest certain systems for their readers.

It can be found in the menu to your left under "HW Leaderboard"

This is updated at least once a month. I'd think that realiability would be one of their criteria...

Ya paindevine, I know the leaderboard, and I think that there are good 7900's out there, and I think it is a superior card, when they work.......BUT, given all the issues, I agree, it probably shouldn't be on the leaderboard anymore, at least until they figure out the issues.

I musta got lucky, my Evga 7900GT has been up and running fine since I installed it. It's currently running on the Evga MOBO I got with my 7800GT. Anyone figured out what the issue is with the Evga 7900 seties is yet?

Thought I would try nvidia too so,I picked up an evga 79gt co after all the bugs were supposed to be fixed about 2wks ago and rma'd it on 3rd day of use. Now I picked up an inexpensive x800xl that worked straight from the box. I'll see what's out there next year for a better card.

Sponsored by UPS or FedEx perhaps? Someone's making money out of all of those RMAs
