    AMD owns ATI (woot)

On July 24, 2006, AMD and ATI announced a plan to join forces, in a transaction that will combine AMD’s technology leadership in microprocessors with ATI’s strengths in graphics, chipsets and consumer electronics. The result is a processing powerhouse: a new competitor, better equipped to drive growth, innovation and choice for its customers in commercial and mobile computing segments and in rapidly-growing consumer electronics segments. The transaction, valued at US $5.4 billion, is expected to close in Q4 2006 subject to approval by ATI shareholders, court approval, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California with centers of excellence around the world, the new company will have a combined workforce of approximately 14,900 employees. This transaction breaks new ground for both companies and is expected to provide increased customer benefits in four key technology areas:

    Commercial Clients
As a combined company, AMD and ATI will develop commercial platforms that deliver simplicity, stability, and manageability in graphics-rich and mobile environments.

    Mobile Computing
As a combined company, AMD and ATI will advance mobile computing by delivering integrated platforms that are designed to extend battery life while optimizing graphics and media processing.

    Consumer Digital Media
As a combined company, AMD and ATI will empower users to create and experience rich, immersive digital entertainment across multiple consumer devices, including PCs, handhelds, and digital televisions.

    High-Growth Markets
As a combined company, AMD and ATI will deliver highly-integrated, low-cost, power-efficient solutions to meet the expanding demands of billions of new users in emerging markets.

good news to me for amd and those of us who like our ati video cards, amd needed to start making its own chipsets/intagrated chipsets(onboard video) now they can compete with intel in that market providing a complete package to oems like dell, hp, exct.

maby we get lucky and they will slash gpu prices to :P

how much ya wana bet these rummors come from the net?

i would bet they are due to all the people who think amd should have tryed to buy nvidia.

we shal see, personaly if i was ati i wouldnt want to sell to intel, they would endup closing ati and just taking the IP, bye bye jobs of ati employs, good buy ati tech to gen public, hellow onboard x300 performace for all.
but from what i been reading its a done deal, ati voted unanomosly to merge with amd, and amd and intel both announced it was a done deal, it would make them look relly bad if they changed the story a couple days after posting it with such great excitment and furvor.

Perhaps AMD will push ATI linux driver improvement. Some good might come of this afterall. It is good for AMD short term regardless, as ATI makes chipsets for Intel systems. That's got to be a wealth of knowledge about current Intel platforms.

Intel would be blocked from buying ATI by the FTC anyway. AMD doesn't make graphics chips, so has no such problem.

Looks to be a big rumor probably: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3511

I thought the whole rumor of AMD buying ATI was outlandish until recently so you just never know when the rumors start flying.

talked to 2 ppl i know at intel, they all had the same thing to say, that rummor made them laugh, intel would have to fight with the ftc if they tryed to buy ati, and intel isnt intrested in buying ati or nvidia or the like, they feel they already have supperior onsite solutions to the ones offered by 3rd partys.
(arrogance is rampent at intel head office)
they think this rummon came from the net probbly a board/forum then spred, kinda like the rummor that a deadly linux virus was spreding allover the net a few weeks back......HAHAHAHAHA
noobs spreding rummors for 5000 alex!

    Re: AMD owns ATI (woot)

not really, they are annoied nothing more, they are arrogant enought to think that amd has no real chance to take them on toe ta toe, no i dont mean there avrage empolys or engineers im taking about the higher ups and marketing guys, they honestly have them selves convenced that they have nothing to fear from puny little amd.

but from what im being told intel was droping the ati chipset contract/licence anyway, they may drop nvidia's chipset licence as well if they cant get nvidia to kiss there arses and let them add sli support to the intel chipset under a contract that favors intels intrests.
that means intel may shoot itself in the foot here soon, that will make me ROFL, specly if then ati desided to pull the crossfire licence for future intel chipsets, god that would be classic, intel putting itself in a market possition to fail with gamers/extream users

I doubt it. Intel makes more profit in a quarter than AMD does in a year. Actually, AMD has yet to spit out 4 consecutive quarters of profit to my knowledge.

surprising that, considering they have almost a quarter of the marketshare and charge three times for their chips what they're realistically worth
