Re: QUIZ: Anyone for Terrorist Profiling?

No one ever said profiling would catch very single terrorist. Profiling is a generalization, a tool, to help narrow the field. Just as efforts to curb illegal immigration targets Latino-looking people when they are not the only illegal immigrants, just the largest number.

Re: QUIZ: Anyone for Terrorist Profiling?

Look at the eyes. The Secret Service are taught to look at the person's eyes and since they suspect everyone they look at the eyes and go from there. Unfortunately, TSA cannot have everyone undergo as much training as the Secret Service and with the politically correct thing of screening elderly Americans in wheel chairs while trying not to overly profile people from the Middle East, this will ultimately get people killed. Look at pick pockets profile their targets and the ultimate profiling of girls in bars (if you don't believe me ask any girl). As my profiling college roommate used to say, "There is no such thing as fat and ugly. If you're fat, you're ugly."

Look at the pictures and you can see the evil whether from Nazis, abortion bombers to Islamic terrorists.

There is a repeating pattern to the male Islamists between 17 and 40 years of age.

It goes more deepily then this, they're also asked to look at the behavour of the subject and go far beyond racial demographics.

    Which the screeners aren't taught.

Its only when we know what these guys have done or when there presented in a suspicious manner that they appear evil.

There is a repeating pattern to the male Islamists between 17 and 40 years of age.
Which can mean Arab, East Asian, South East Asian, Persain, North African, or even Caucasian.

You'll also note that the number of these guys have been small, contrast this to the number of travellers and the domestic community and screening by ethnicity or religion becomes less useful.

Most of the recent cases that have resulted in stopping of plots have come from tips from the Islamic community and not from screening or survilience.

So what's wrong with looking at all of those closely? What would be dangerous or imposing on anyone's civil rights by letting Mary Lou's baby have formula or the 80 year old ladies to be looked at less closely?

among the airline bomb-plot suspects were a mom-and-dad suicide couple who planned to take their baby with them on the mission.
Scotland Yard police are quizzing Abdula Ahmed Ali, 25, and his 23-year-old wife Cossor over suspicions they were to use their baby's bottle to hide a liquid bomb.

Promote then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.

Except your using the article for the basis of your argument, this leaves the author of the article out of the argument and you on the hook to defend your position based on the material you present.

However, can we get back to the issue in this thread?

And about those 80 year old ladies?

You posted in another thread about how silly all this airport screening is, yet you don't wanna narrow things down to be more efficient while retaining security. Its a lot like the lion in the Wizard of Oz, with one arm tied behind his back.

Your coulda, woulda, shoulda suggestions can go on forever. But so far, these people all fit a profile, no matter how broad that profile may be. In the meantime, people far outside of that profile are being unnecessarily hassled.

    Its just stupid.

Not to mention, a big arsed waste of time and money.

    See? Not "Mary Lou".
The theory is one of the reasons security chiefs are now insisting mothers taste babies' milk at check-in desks before allowing them to take bottles aboard flights.
    That's better.

You are the Boston FBI Special Agent in charge of counterterrorism.

You have eight suspects; one has a bomb set to detonate in one minute. Your job is to frisk and restrain the perpetrator, and safely disarm or dispose of the bomb.

Which suspect would be your first target?

    1. 80 year Black female
    2. 5 year old Caucasian male
    3. 25 year old Arab male
    4. 3 month old Hispanic female
    5. Wheelchair bound paraplegic with service dog (any age, any ethnicity)
    6. Playboy Center Fold clad in Bunny Suit
    7. Sasquatch
    8. Sponge Bob

Remember you have just 60 seconds before detonation.

    Edit: My choice is #3

This, they thought, would ensure that they would be able to pass through security -- even if they were asked to unseal and drink the beverage.

I don't understand how profiling would be put into practice. What do the proponents of profiling want exactly?

If there is a raised threat level I'm sure that they already do look closer at certain people than others.

If they were to get to narrow in there vision some Johnny Walker Lindh would slip right through....

I'd frisk the Playboy bunny for a little bit, then go for the Arab dude if I have time

I'd hide behind Sasquatch. Then use Sponge Bob to clean up the mess.

#5 only on two conditions, first theres an active threat and if the person is acting suspiciously.

If we're going this route for such a small number of catches, go the whole nine-yards like the Israeli's.

Everyone gets searched regardless of ethnicity, however all the security is regulated by the federal state and not private interests.
