    Question windows/system32/mprapi.dll - help please

    Hi,

Could someone please confirm the latest version number for windows/system32/mprapi.dll together with the md5 checksum value for this file on a fully patched WinXP Professional installation.

    Version: 5.1.2600.2180
    md5sum: 9f78f329b1858e845087b923b4dba0f3 mprapi.dll

    Thanks,

    Ned

Thanks man - you checked the md5 checksum too?

Perhaps you may know - if windows file protection replaces a corrupt file (during a sfc.exe scan), what happens if the file had been previously updated as part of a service pack or fix/update?

Presumably the cache isn't large enough to cache all files, and windows file protection asks for the original media so I'm assuming some files could be restored from there and be out of date.

Yeah I checked the MD5 checksum with MS FCIV.

Not entirely sure about SFC. When you say the "cache", do you mean %windir%\system32\dllcache? If so, I was under the impression that when cached DLL's etc are updated via Windows updates, the existing cached files are replaced with the newer files when you reboot the PC, hence the cached files should be the latest available.

The DLL cache can vary from one rig to another (you may or may not have all system32 DLL's cached), though usually they're all there and should be signed files from the last MS updates you did. Not sure how third-party replacement files are handled. I've never checked if they're cached but always figured they're not 'cos they're generally not signed files. Usually they're outdated and the CD versions are a better match anyway. Third party replacements are pretty common.

I know SFC will go for the dllcache first, then the CD, so usually it's a fair bet that you'll get the correct file from the cache, unless the cached file itself is corrupted, in which case it'll go to the CD. I guess if you get a file replaced from the CD, you'd have to update it manually - assuming you knew which files were out of date. You could check them by their creation date.

Does that make sense or help your cause?

    EDIT: Maybe these will help:

..also the SFC CD prompt can be a bit dodgy. If you've got more than one CD drive for example, it may prompt every couple of seconds, but doesn't seem to copy files to the hard drive.

    Thanks Mj

Yes, I kept geiing retry messages on the CD, but it never actually seamed to read any files from the CD.

Event viewer said that file was updated so just wanted to be 100% sure it had been correctly resorted with the most recent version.

No worries. Hey, I never thought to check with Event Viewer. That makes things a bit easier

Yes, any corrupted/replaced files are logged

I was getting the occasional cryptic error message in event viewer that a module failed, but no other useful error message, just a generic code and unknown module so I thought I'd give sfc a spin just in case. It "fixed" that one file, so I'll now monitor to see if that clears up the eooro messages in event viewer.

My guess would be that file became corrupted due to OCing slightly too far during to hotter summer temps, so probably my own fault

We managed a couple of weeks in the mid 30's celcius. Must be global warming

I guess it's all relative. My CPU temps run 15-20C hotter in summer than in winter. When it's OC'ed to the limit, I guess the difference can easily push it over the edge.

Are you running air or water cooling?

Last summer in Melbourne we had a few days where it peaked at 47°C. I didn't have fans or aircon (oil heaters are no good in summer are they). Tried to start up a game and one of the graphics cards fell over within about a minute. Not even overclocked. Needless to say, I stuck to just email and internet after that. I live (much) further north now and the temps are between 25-30°C these days, which is OK, but they said on the news tonight that Australia is headed for one of the hottest summers ever!

All air cooling. OC'ed Athlon XP-M's with Panaflo 92mm low noise fans on thermalright sinks.

I don't use cases, so room temp becomes system temp (no case to cool, I can't think of a worse environment than a tin box for a PC that gets hot ), but my office gets up to about 30C in summer. It's great in winter as I keep it at about 16-17C and of course it's cooler still at floor level where the PC's are
