    Anyone here have a plasma?

I just said f@#$ it and bought this 50" and I'm pleased so far but I need some settings..pro settings where it's not so sharp or bright. I can still return it within..I forget now but I was thinking the Samsung 46" 1080p LCD..can't make up my mind. The question is should I keep it or go for LCD and 1080p. Pros seem to think Plasma looks better and I agree but not by much. That 1080p is what's killing me.

This already looks nice but I don't want to risk missing 1080p when I can have it now. Anyone with an hddvd player and 720p?

And for Dan..I got this just for the hell of it. Can't be complete without a baby Mastiff.

already tearing up my practice room but..she's smart enough to not even stare at the guitars.

for a tv that size i highly recommend a dlp, image should be much better than a plasma.

so if you take it back, look at the dlp's

Well, I was looking at them but the viewing angles on DLPs are ridiculous. My friend has a 56" Samsung DLP..nice, beautiful pq but man when you move at slight angles forget it.

Plasmas have the deep blacks and contrast that you can't find anywhere else so that's why I picked it. Now..I'm 100% satisfied with it. I set up the dust collecting xbox360 and it looks incredible, same with tv. I'm happy all around BUT..it's the 1080p that I won't get with it. It's 1366 x 768 max res with this plasma but it looks beautiful. In the store where I had the test it was better (with contrast and blacks) than the LCDs even better than the Bravia 1080p by Sony. They didn't have a 46"+ 1080p set for me to try out. The blacks and richness of colors with the plasma was right up there with CRTs but what I'm thinking is that once I get an HDdvd or Bluray that the 1080p will make a big difference. I'm told it shouldn't and going by AVSForums.com everyone says that under 50" 1080p is meaningless.

Would you sacrifise better colors and contrast for higher resolution? ..that's the question. I can't answer myself because I don't have anything 1080p to try.

Now I hear the Samsungs and even Sony LCDs have bad overscan WTF? Someone put up pics of a video game with xbox360 and they showed the hud on a shooting game not showing up correctly. I went and got 2 360 games to try and the racing game looks incredible and no overscan with that and the boxing game but that lack of 1080p is biting my ass.

I would have a DLP already but the viewing angle problem I couldn't get past it.

Hopefully someone with an HD dvd player or BlueRay can inform me or advice me. Is contrast and colors worth trading in for 1080p vs the 720p I already have? I must be retarded because I think I answered my own question..it's just that small doubt.

If i was gonna drop that much on a HDTV, i'd totally want 1080p... 46" aint nuffin to sneeze at either.

as for which looks better, I wouldn't know.

If you like this one keep it and in a year or two 1080 will be all over the place and you can get a second TV for the bedroom.

I thought that way but man I hate to spend that much on tvs in such a short time. It is what it is though..1080p is still a strange thing with all the vga/dvi and hdmi inputs it's a pain right now. I think I'll keep it..one thing that has me worried now..I just noticed a small amount of IR but it's going away.

Do you seriously think that laser TV's are going to be 1/2 the price of Plasmas when they come out??

Your decision should boil down to two things. Do you have good light control and do you use it as a computer monitor.

IF you have good light control, the plasma will look WAY better than an LCD. The contrast and darks are worlds better than even the good LCD's. The only reason to use an LCD is a very bright room and you plan to use it as a computer monitor.

I thought I recalled something about plasmas not lasting as long as the other monitor/tuners. Correct me, but I thought typically it was around 5 years or so.

don't know the length but it is said that picture quality dimishes with time more so on plasma than i believe other techn ologies. with dlp's i think you need to replace a light or something eventually, but i don't believe picture quality actually diminishes.

Re: Anyone here have a plasma?

I love my Sony 55" KDF55E2000 3LCD model. Yeah it's only 720p/1080i but the image is beautiful. I get one over-the-air 1080i broadcast and its just amazing. I compared to DLPs and liked the picture on the Sony better. Just looks crisper and sharper to me. I looked at 1080p models and really couldn't see much difference in picture quality so I didn't see the point of spending another $800+ for that feature. Maybe the price difference is less now, I'm not sure.

I saw a Plasma TV at someones house, I reckon the picture looked blurred. Didnt like it. I believe LCD would look better.

    should.

    crt>dlp>lcd>plasma

    general concensus seems to agree.

of course there are exceptions when you have a crappy lcd, and a great plasma, or an awesome lcd and a lousy dlp, but as far as the technologies go, i believe that's the order.
