    Upgrading to X-FI Fatal1ty - worth it?

    Hi there,

Currently I have a Audigy 2 but I am thinking of upgrading to a X-FI Fatal1ty card. I use my pc for games, movies, and music. My PC is is like my all round system. I just kinda wanna know if the price of the Fatal1ty justifies its purchase and if the difference in performance and quality is worth it over the Audigy 2.

    Thanks guys,

I went from an Audigy 2 to a X-Fi Xtreme Music and thought it was worth it, so I would say you will think the same...

there's a fatality coming with no drive bay thing for like $150.

There's also an XtremeAudio version that only does entertainment mode; it looks like an audigy SE with a new name as it doesn't have the Xfi DSP.

I went from the Audigy2 to the Xtrememusic and love it. Games are not a big improvement, but still improved. Headphones absolutely rock. In Xfi supporting apps, headphones are basically as good as 5.1. You can distinguish sounds all around you!

BTW, the drive bay thingie is the same as the audigy2's, just without firewire.

I am enjoying my fatality. The Front bay is great for my headphones. The only thing I dont like is the crackling/popping/static I get at times but a lot of people get that with their x-fi of any flavour.

I like it for headphones too, but I wish more apps supported the Microphone. Most of the games only want to work with the Mic1 port on the back

I don't think you should upgrade. You are not going to hear much of an improvement unless you have really good hearing. Better off saving money if you want to upgrade to go with the top Diamond DDL sound card.

For movies and gaming that card isn't an upgrade. Music maybe, but gaming, no.

    Surround decoding?
    Hardware effects engine?

true, it has dolby live, but that only encodes what the very limited positioning engine can put together.

If you want to go with the Fatal1ty and save a few bucks (just over $100) go for this,

same card minus the breakout box, unless you want/need the box that is.

The main thing I like about my X-Fi is that CMSS is now hardware based. I used to have clicks, pops, and chirps when playing audio at high CPU load on my Audigy. No such problem with the X-Fi.

with the new drivers being out id say its definitly worth it. But id get the platinum version. Well thats what i got and i love it. It "lagged" before new driver. Now works great. I love my X-fi. Way better than the audigy 2. Id say crystalizer is worth it alone. Makes highs higher and lows lower. Very nice stuff.

If you can swing the cash, go with the Elite. It uses a superior DAC to the XM/Fatality/Platinum card. The DAC on the Elite is the AKM, which is the same unit found on the EMU 1212M, it gives less jitter and a wider sound stage. The other X-Fi models use the Cirrus Logic DAC.

I agree, but the elite costs some serious scratch. I wish they would release a version without the hub.

On another note, there is a new XtremeGamer version. That card is compatible with the front ports on many cases, but loses the capability to support the platinum drive bay module.

Thanks for your replies guys - I'd love the Elite, but just damn costs too much, might seriously think about that XtremeGamer version. Thanks again

so the XtremeMusic and XtremeGamer are the same card right? I wish I could find a site that ranked all of creatives cards.

Re: Upgrading to X-FI Fatal1ty - worth it?

    no.

the XtremeMusic is upgradable to the Platinum internal I/O module or the Elite external I/O module. The XtremeGamer is not, but is compatible with the Intel HD audio case headers. The XtremeMusic is, too, to some extent, but you have to work at it.

    Ranked from worst to best
XtremeAudio: not even a real Xfi
XtremeGamer: seems to be a fully fledged model
XtremeMusic: first of the "real" Xfis
    XtremeGamer Fatality: 64MB Xram
    Platinum: XtremeMusic with I/O module
Fatality FPS: 64MB Xram with internal I/O
Elite: Best DACS, 64MB Xram, external I/O

I think the XtremeMusic is being replaced with the XtremeGamer, judging by the low price and rebate on newegg.
