    Linux from Scratch

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for a way to know ins & out of linux. I'm talking about understanding how to build it from scratch like the LFH project. Is there a video I can buy or download or any training places in Boston area to attend to know me this stuff.

My goal is to be able to build my own distro, get the kernel, slap my own file system, window manager, dev tools and fly with it. I had a friend that worked at IBM as a kernel developer and he said it would take someone about 9 hours to sit down and show me all that I need to know but he moved to another state . What would be best way to accomplish my goal? I'm a visual person and I learn best by seeing stuff done in front me instead of reading a book.

Maybe look these geeks up. LUG's are great resources for hands on learning.

I'm a software engineer, I wrote system level programs for linux and familiar with some of its kernel API. I deploy most of my enterprise apps writeen in Java to linux with tomcat. I can install it, config things in it but I don't know it inside out as I know windows. For example, knowing how to go play with registry, modify service settings, inject stuff into explorer process with my customized extentions, etc... would like to learn equivalent stuff on Linux beside building it from scratch.

I'd suggest starting with http://www.freestandards.org/en/Developers as it has a developer section that outlines the basic requirements to get a distro in a workable form.
