    Alternative to AVG(free)?

Since support for the free version of AVG will halt sometime soon.
What's an alternative to this AV program?

    How is AVAST?

Excuse me if this has been discussed before.

Avast and AntiVir are probably the two best known competitors (links below).

However, I'd also recommend you take a look at a free product from AOL (yes, seriously!) called Active Virus Shield. It's a cut down version of Kaspersky AntiVirus version 6 but without all the extra bells and whistles:

    http://www.activevirusshield.com/ant...eav/index.adp?

Personally, my vote would go for Active Virus Shield followed by AntiVir, but I'd strongly recommend you ignore anyone's advice and check each out for yourself. All 3 a more than capable for home users who aren't at high risk.

Most of these require registration via email so use a throw away email address to register

For independent and unbiased review of their detection rates, check out AV-Comparatives (link below) and click on the comparatives link in the side bar:

EDIT: I'm not sure AVG Free is totally stopping, just version 7.1 is end of life. I think you can still upgrade to the free version 7.5?? although I haven't double checked that.

GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.
Looks like NS is right to me.

Understandable, because if you go through the link in the AVG program notification pop-up, that is just what it looks like. Says something to the effect of "AVG will time out on January XX, Click here to see your upgrade options". that link takes you to the pay-program page. There is nothing there that obviously says that you can just upgrade to 7.5 and continue to use AVG for free. You have to go elsewhere on the site to find out about AVG 7.5 Free.

Now that you mention that Senor, that is exactly what led me to think I was going to have look somewhere else.

I've also been using AVG Free 7.5 for 2-3 weeks now on all my boxes and have had no problems.

If you are having a hard time finding it, just google AVG 7.5 free.

if you like it so much, why not spring for the pay version and help make the product stay around longer?

just have had to repurchase a 2 year script from them, think it cost me around 5-6 bucks a year per machine for the program now.......that is inexpensive as it gets.......plus you will sleep better at night.....hehehe
