I need to disable IE but keep internet open.

Hello I hope you have an answer or can point me in the right direction for this question.

My company has a computer set up in the plant that has UPS WorldShip on it.
We need Internet access on this computer so it will send the end of day transaction and if we need to track a package.

The problem is that workers in the back are surfing the internet on this computer.
We need it up for UPS label printing and everybody uses it for that so changing the password wont solve the problem.

So is there a way to just disable IE so they cant access the web?

    Thanks

You can rename the internet explorer executable.

Change the host file on the machine so that it can only go to UPS. That way, if they use firefox or whatever, everything just resolves to UPS.com

That would be cool, but AFAICT, the hosts file does not allow wildcards. So how would you do that?

Surely you're not suggesting a hosts file with every domain

Just found this info at http://sillydog.org/forum/sdt_2677.php
    Will try it out today.

I have found the best way yet to disable IE. This will allow you to disable Internet Explorer for general browsing, but still have it work for WindowsUpdate.
***Or right click on the IE icon on your desktop and click properties

First open IE, and open the options screen by clicking on 'Tools' at the top of the screen and clicking on 'Options'.,

Click the 'Connections' tab at the top of the new options window that has appeared.

Click the 'LAN Settings' button that is towards the bottom of the options window.

Check the box that says 'Use a proxy server for your LAN'.

In the 'Address' field, enter anything - I put 'fakeproxy'.

Click the 'Advanced' button, then in the 'exceptions' text box enter '*.microsoft.com' and then click OK.

Now IE will only function on pages at Microsoft.com, and WindowsUpdate.

I tried this today and it works like a charm, just put in the dot.coms you want access too and those will be available.
I had to put in several more .microsoft.com for the updates to work tho.
    *.microsoft.com;*.ups.com;ups.com;*.update.microsoft.com;*.update.microsoft.com;download.windowsupda te.com
