Was there a protective piece of plastic film on the bottom of the CPU heatsink?

It may be a good idea to pull the CPU heatsink and take a look at it. Use fresh AS5 or other good compound to re-install it.

I've had monitors that heat up and smell like burning plastic. If it's not film on the heatsink or the monitor, my bet is the PSU.

Lol Spartacus, you had to remind me of that.
Had just that happen to me about 4 years ago when I installed a Vantec Aeroflow on my Soyo KT400.
I remembered admiring the blue anodizing on the base of the hs just before I installed it.
Then there was this horrible smell just before the computer shut down.
Turns out the anodizing was a plastic film.
Wasn't real easy getting it off either.

Thx for the tip and the fsp recommendation. I think it is the mobo. I chatted w/emachine people and I can get a free checkup from the Geek Squad. I'm under warrenty but I don't trust them and feel they'll either have the PC for a month or they'll shake me down for some doe. The problem is I've run hot cpu, prime, sisandra and no problems. I changed the psu and the smell is still there but much less evident without the gt7600. Less stink w/out the video card but still stink what does that mean? I'll pop the cpu and reapply the ac but I am pessimistic. Thx Tia steve
