Switched to Xubuntu, one problem

At my work I switched to Xubuntu since Windows crashes with my heavy multi-threaded development.

I got everything to work like I want except one thing. Email, we use exchange server at work. I tried evolution, it connects to server but does not sync correctly. I found crossover to run outlook. Two problems with that, first I have to pay for it and I thought Linux was to be all free. Second, all office applications work except outlook. It cannot find the exchange server even thought I can ping it, and its IP is in hosts file. Can I use wine to run outlook? how to have it connect to server?

How can I connect to the exchange server and get pretty much everything outlook has (calender, tasks, email, etc....). I know I can run an IMAP client but that would let me send/receive email only and I'll miss appointments, notes, other things outlook has.

For exchange servers I dont think there are good options for an email client. Evolution is suppose to do it, but your not the first person I have heard say that it dosnt. Thunderbird I dont belive does exchange servers at all.

As for what you can do, you can try wine and installing outlook. By chance does your company have a web site you can access your email thru? I know mine does and I choose to use that over outlook because the computers they give us blow and outlook uses alot of resources(in my opinion)

Are you running samba on the linux box, and is it joined to the windows domain with ADS?

I thought Linux was to be all free

The intent was for the base OS to be free, and then developers have the option of making non-free or free apps depending on thier needs.

Its more about choice when going with Linux rather then everything being free.

Yes, currently that's what I do,I use the website based email from exchange server but I keep missing my meetings because there is no reminders. Mainly what I need is reminders of my meetings. Anyway to get that working?

The only option I found, is to install IE 6 in wine and I can have reminders. But I was trying to avoid wine since it's not stable.

How do I setup samba to join AD with ADS?

All what I did in samba config file, I put the AD name and I can ping other machines by name and I can SSH into my machine from other machines.

You will need to use Kerberos for login authentication in order to let your linux box join in a Windows AD domain. Here is a tutorial on how to setup samba as an AD member: http://acd.ucar.edu/~fredrick/linux/samba3/

I use Thunderbird as my main email client in X. If you install Sunbird plugin for Thunderbird, you will have calender/agenda/reminder functionality just like outlook(though I'm not sure whether Sunbird can sync with a MS exchange or not).

I don't know if there is another good option for you now....if they upgrade the version of Exchange webmail.....I think the webmail with Exchange 2003 has the ability to pop-up notifications...

Yea, thats why I meantioned webmail. I know I get my appointment popups and calander on the company webmail so I thought all versions were like that.

pop-up notifications work but only with IE, that means I have to run IE4linux to get that. Do you know if there is anyway for Firefox to emulate IE on linux?

I use IE at work for all all the company stuff because FF does not work with any of that.

You might want to try opera. I know on the web atleast alot of websites that are suppose to be IE only see opera as IE.

If you browse your webmail system with Opera, you'll be able to configure Opera to identify it's self as IE. Just open your webmail then go to Tools --> Quick Preferences --> Edit site Preferences --> Network. Then change the Identify as pull down to either Identify as Internet Explorer or Mask as Internet Exploerer. I'm not sure the difference between the two, but one of them should fool the server into believing you're using IE.

A little off topic, but for some reason I think IE was based on Opera technology. Not sure. You'd have to look at IE's about page to find out. I may be confusing this with yet another browser.

But if IE is based on Opera then you'll have a resonable chance of getting it to work. I've just installed Opera on Friday just to try it out (Not too happy with FF2). It seems to have an IE7 feel. Mind you I've only used IE7 for all of 15 minuites, so don't take my word on it!

IE was based on the same browser as Netscape that Andreesen helped develop while in college, Mosaic.

Ah yes, thank you. You're right. I couldn't think of that name. For some strange reason I thought it might have been Opera.

Without knowing the details of exactly what this actually does, I'm guessing it just changes the User Agent string in the packet header.
