Question Vista DFI LanParty UT NF4

I installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit on my system and cannot get it to recognize my "My Book Essential" Western Digital 500gb drive. It fails upon installation and defaults to "Unknown Device".

I have also tried to use different USB slots to no avail.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Below are the specs of my system.

    Mother Board: DFI Lanparty Expert
    CPU: AMD 64x2 4200+
    Video: Nvidia GeForce 7900GTX 512mb
    CPU Cooler: Zalman 9500
    Ram: 3GB (Corsair / Crucial)
Operating System: Windows Vista Ulitmate 54bit

What about the Root USB Device in Device Manager? Are they checking out okay (ie. not X'd out or other error beside it)?

Nope. All other 10 (I believe) USB slots are recognized and correctly installed. I'll uplaod a pic of the device manager if necessary.

    thanks a bunch

I cannot upload a pic of the Device Manager, but I have the info:

Once the drive is turned on, it will display this message at the bottom right of the screen:

    "USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB Devices attached to this computer
has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.
For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."

(when i click the message, the prompts do not solve the problem, they ask me to contact the manufacturer, etc.)

The Device Manager shows a Yellow ! next to Generic USB Hub.
    The details are:

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

    and

    "Location: Port_#0010.Hub_#0002"

Hope this sheds some light on something.

Yeah, you can't upload here, but you can use an image host like ImageShack or Photobucket.

Have you tried reinstalling the drive? Have you disabled any onboard devices you're not using (ie. serial ports, parallel ports, AC97 audio, floppy, etc) in BIOS?

Do you have the most up to date x64 drivers for your USB?

    Or all for that matter.

    Check these:

    Version: 15.00
    Release Date: February 5, 2007
    WHQL Certified
    File Size: 20.51 MB

    Driver Versions:

    *
    Ethernet Driver (v65.55) WHQL
    *
    SMBus Driver (v4.60) WHQL
    *
    Installer (v5.40)
    *
    IDE SataRAID Driver (v9.31) WHQL
    *
    IDE SataIDE Driver (v9.31) WHQL
    *
    RAIDTOOL Application (v9.31)
    *
    SMU (v1.23) WHQL

Nvidia site seems to be down for some reason right now, but im sure it will be working soon enough.

Thanks for the suggestions but i'm at a dead end. (updated the nforce and dfi drivers too)

I did get the drives to recognize once I shut off 2.0 capability under the integrated peripherals in the bios and leave 1.0. So now I have a very very slow 500gb drive....frustrating...

I cannot imagine where else to look on my computer for an answer....

maybe the answer is somewhere in the manual...but it worked perfectly prior to vista...strange...

Might just be something with Vista 64 itself, as XP 64 was known to be a bit of a pain.

Did you try contacting WD to see if they have any ideas?

One of the many reasons I'm avoiding Vista like the plague. Maybe next year when they get some of the bugs worked out, but definitely not until Service Pack 2.

ok, after loading the optimized defaults in my BIOS I have USB at 2.0 working...

I also forgot to state that I installed adobe prior to noticing my plextor stopped working, apparently it is a documented issue and after deleting one registry key it solved the issue..here is that link:

    thanks for the support guys
