Null route it in the hosts file: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

    add entry...

    Code:
    127.0.0.1 www.site.to.block.com
    127.0.0.1 site.to.block.com
or block the url and/or IP in the router if you have one.

Yes, use the host file or just block the URL with your firewall.
You can get the IP of the website you want to block by pinging it

You have a couple of options here:

    1. Edit the host file.
    2. Use your firewall to block the site.
    3. Use your router to block the site.
    4. Buy special software that block sites

Hosts file as stated would be the easiest way to do it, of course its also just as easy to undo if the person being blocked has admin access.

True, but the nice thing about blocking using hosts is that firstly most users have never heard of it, and secondly, it blocks almost silently not arising suspicions of the user that they are being blocked as the site just returns as unreachable. You can always set file permissions/ownership on the hosts file to stop others undoing your work

I have the free version of K9 Web Protection installed on all my PCs. Prevents the kids from stumbling onto any of bad stuff on the web. It has the capability to block specific sites.

    Re: Blocking a website?

This was on a pc running Vista Ultimate, and it was very easy to do. I just went into the advanced section of the firewall, and you can choose by websites name. I then changed the users access to limited, and password protected my side.

I gotta say, thanks for asking that question BD. I never would've thought to ask that, but now that you have, I have successfully blocked my brothers from visiting myspace on my PC. I realize that some of the stuff there ain't bad, but I have seen enough to know that some of it is, and I don't want them to view that on my PCs.

MY space is PRECISELY the website I was looking to block. Seems it a joke nowadays to send viruses and Porn back to your pc.My pc picked up a keylogger from there. One teacher here is looking at 5 years in jail, because of a MYSPACE PRANK. Somehow, they were able to download porn onto to her pc. My daughter is 25, but she started screwing around on that site. NOT ANYMORE

    Re: Blocking a website?

As I understand it, the main problem with MySpace is that they allow code injection on their site. Makes it almost trivial to inject malicious html (iFrames) or javascript into pages.

    Re: Blocking a website?

I didn't know the specific reason I didn't like, it just seemed wrong. Especially when they'd hit a site that bring them to a porn-esque site where you had to click to enter. Then I'd say "You know, I'd prefer it if you would not browse that site on my PC." They kept doing it, but like you said... Not anymore!

    Thanks again!

Kind of tough, when every new cyber law is making YOU,the pc owner responsible for whatever happens on your PC. I'm glad I don't have any teens in this house.
