New CPU for my SLI Premium

I have been running a XP 3200+ in my Sli Premium now since I first built my HTPC. I would like to now upgrade my CPU to something faster and would like some input. What would be the best CPU I can get right now for this mobo, and what is the best bang for the buck? I haven't read much on the dual core cpus so I could use some info on this.

    Thanks

I have that same board and just upgraded from a single to dual core. I only used opterons however.

First off it depends if you multitask or use programs that are multi threaded. Second it depends if you are into overclocking. And finally budget.

However, if you stick with single core, newegg has the opteron 146 for $98, if you dont overclock then i would get the san diego 3700, its only $74.

If you go dual core then for overclocking i would get the opteron 165 or 170(~$190). If not going to overclock then the x2 4400 seems a good option at $179.

Thanks for your help. Can anyone point me to a good page to read about the opteron? (the different numbers and such) I would like to go with a dual core anyway, probably the opteron

Re: New CPU for my SLI Premium

I have been looking into replacing my board and CPU for bit, I have a thread here about it.

I will tell you in just the last week the 939 chips are starting to go out of inventory from folks. I had a shopping cart with a FX-60 at Chief Value and at New Egg also, over night they BOTH were taken out of my cart.

So I suggest getting the most CPU for the money you can affort now, as they will be gone or too expensive to afford soon I think.

killer, you are so right, I had an athlon x2 4400+ in my cart @ tigerdirect and now it's gone! so my next best option is either the x2 3800+ or the opteron 170. the opteron is approx. $75 cdn more than the x2. If I plan on overclocking , which one should i get?

The opteron 165s and 170s all overclock very well and at stock voltage they are virtually an FX core

I've got my x2 4400 at 2.75ghz right now, if that helps you out at all. It could probably go higher, but it runs stable 24/7 so I'm good.

Well, I got an Opteron 165 Dual Core, and I'm running 300x9 right now. I have the OCZ EL Rev.2 PC3200 2x512 at 266Mhz divider, which is about 193Mhz. I'm stressing with Orthos and it's been going for a couple of hours so far.

Have you tried your memory divider at 166? That RAM should be good for it especially if its the Platinum Rev2. Its a shame to run memory like that below stock speeds. What is your Vcore set at etc?

if you dont want to swap the mobo, then go for the opty single core or x2. or....am2 x2 3600+ a nice tforce, both should cost as much as an opty 165 or less ..
