This is the result of global warming, said British Antarctic Survey scientist David Vaughan.
Of course it is..... see 2 posts up.

I'm changing my name to Carnac the Magnificent. The empirical data that shows the oceans are cooling.. not warming as the "believers" stated would happen... is negated by photos of ice falling off a shelf. Because we all know the only reason why ice ever fell off a shelf or glaciers melt is MMGW.

    MMGW circa 1922..

    Cycling through life

One of these days, perhaps, we'll recognize the fact that the earth has a cyclic nature and whatever we're seeing today probably has been seen previously and, as you'll see in this 1922 article, was met as a natural phenomenon rather than a harbinger of doom and gloom. And, refreshingly, no one tried to blame it on man.

As far as I can tell, no lowland flooding was reported because of the large ice melt.

    Pdf here.

    From the comments..

RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! THE ICE IS MELT…

    What?

    1922?

    Really?

    No way.

    Come on, that’s not funny…

global warming is natural. humans are not at fault. it's simply a cycle the earth naturally goes through.

Gee how big and common were the Icebergs around the Titanic?
Funny now that we can see the Antarctic basically when we want, wow parts break off just like the Northern Ice flows. Who woulda thunk. Obviously not Gores Antarctic fact finding ship that sank due to Icebergs.

    I like this bit..

While icebergs naturally break away from the mainland, collapses like this are unusual but are happening more frequently in recent decades, Vaughan said.
So the seas are cooling over the last 10 years.. but this is happening more often in "recent decades". I'd sure like to see the data and length of time over which they have been able to actually track this type of event. I'd be willing a dime to a dollar the data does not extend past "recent decades".

Ice shelf breakaway in Antarctica claimed to be latest sign of global warming

    Misleading Reports About Antarctica

    By Joseph D’Aleo, CCM

Last year when Antarctic set a new record for ice extent, it got no media attention. They focused on the north polar regions where the ice set record low levels. This summer when unprecedented anomalous cover continued in the Southern Hemisphere again no coverage. Then this report in the news today. You probably saw it on your favorite network or internet news site (pick one, anyone).

Vast Antarctic Ice Shelf on Verge of Collapse - Latest Sign of Global Warming’s Impact Shocks Scientists
    Andrea Thompson Livescience

A vast ice shelf hanging on by a thin strip looks to be the next chunk to break off from the Antarctic Peninsula, the latest sign of global warming’s impact on Earth’s southernmost continent. Scientists are shocked by the rapid change of events. Glaciologist Ted Scambos of the University of Colorado was monitoring satellite images of the Wilkins Ice Shelf and spotted a huge iceberg measuring 25 miles by 1.5 miles (37 square miles) that appeared to have broken away from the shelf. Scambos alerted colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) that it looked like the entire ice shelf - about 6,180 square miles (about the size of Northern Ireland)- was at risk of collapsing. The region where the Wilkins Ice Shelf lies has experienced unprecedented warming in the past 50 years, with several ice shelves retreating in the past 30 years. Six of these ice shelves have collapsed completely: Prince Gustav Channel, Larsen Inlet, Larsen A, Larsen B, Wordie, Muller and the Jones Ice Shelf. See MSNBC version of this story here.

Icecap Note: Let’s put this in perspective. The account may be misinterpreted by some as the ice cap or a significant (vast) portion is collapsing. In reality it and all the former shelves that collapsed are small and most near the Antarctic peninsula which sticks well out from Antarctica into the currents and winds of the South Atlantic and lies in a tectonically active region with surface and subsurface active volcanic activity. The vast continent has actually cooled since 1979.

    See full image here

The full Wilkins 6,000 square mile ice shelf is just 0.39% of the current ice sheet (just 0.1% of the extent last September). Only a small portion of it between 1/10th-1/20th of Wilkins has separated so far, like an icicle falling off a snow and ice covered house. And this winter is coming on quickly. In fact the ice is returning so fast, it is running an amazing 60% ahead (4.0 vs 2.5 million square km extent) of last year when it set a new record. The ice extent is already approaching the second highest level for extent since the measurements began by satellite in 1979 and just a few days into the Southern Hemisphere winter and 6 months ahead of the peak. Wilkins like all the others that temporarily broke up will refreeze soon. We are very likely going to exceed last year’s record. Yet the world is left with the false impression Antarctica’s ice sheet is also starting to disappear.

One Icecap reader points also to a paper (Glasser et al, 2008) identifying some of the other natural processes that can lead to these ice sheet breaks, in this case Larsen B. See pdf of this story for posting here.
Global Warming cleared on Ice Shelf collapse

The evil Global Warming cleared of yet another eco-crime it seems. (Emphasis mine throughout)

The high-profile collapse of some Antarctica's ice shelves is likely the result of natural current fluctuations, not global warming, says a leading British expert on polar climates.

This surprising finding is supported by analysis of data from the European Space Agency's ERS-1 satellite, according to Duncan Wingham, Professor of Climate Physics at University College London.

"But...but...isn't the ice at least thinning? Aren't we losing Antarctic ice?"

Um...no. At least not in the fashion the alarmists are touting.

The data, measuring changes in ice thickness across the Antarctic ice sheet using the polar orbiting satellite, show areas of growth from snowfall are as common as areas of decline.

"Yeah, but you evil deniers are just cherry picking the data. Your making things seems better than they are. Scumbag."

Um...no. Us "evil deniers" aren't the ones cherry picking anything. It seems YOU alarmists are.

This is a contrasting picture to one based solely on the northern Antarctic Peninsula - a shark's fin of land jutting out from the body of the continent, and reaching to just 750 miles from Chile - where there has been a drastic increase in temperature, thinning of ice sheets and collapse of ice shelves. The Larsen A ice shelf, 1600 square kilometres in size, fell off in 1995. The Wilkins ice shelf, 1100 square kilometres, fell off in 1998 and the Larsen B, 13,500 square kilometres, dropped off in 2002. Meanwhile, the northern Antarctic Peninsula's temperatures have soared by six celsius in the last 50 years.

"A lot of attention and research has focused on this relatively accessible area of the Antarctic Peninsula, but satellites are giving us a picture of the continent as a whole," Wingham told the Register. This broader picture shows evidence of growth and decay from place to place, a picture more in line with natural variations in snowfall and ocean circulation. The Antarctic is to some extent insulated from global warming because to its north are zonal flows in the atmosphere and ocean, unimpeded by other landmasses. This insulates the continent from warmer events further north and leads one to suppose it is better protected from global warming.

    WHAT?!!!

This is a very reasoned article written apparently by an unbiased individual. It is a great read.

Will someone please smack the Goracle right in the mouth now?

Then I guess most of the folks posting on this thread believe the Earth is flat. I really do not find what is so hard to understand about mankind changing the environment. Oh well, you all are the minority.
