    Africans thrown overboard

    Shameful..
    http://www.yahoo.com/s/541203

SAN`A, Yemen - Smugglers taking illegal migrants from Somalia to Yemen forced hundreds of Africans overboard in stormy seas in an effort to make a fast getaway from security forces, officials said Monday. Thirty-one bodies have been found and nearly 90 people remained missing.

Passengers who resisted the smugglers were stabbed or beaten with wooden and steel clubs, then thrown into the water where some were attacked by sharks, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said, citing survivors.

"Several recovered bodies showed signs of severe mutilation," UNHCR said. "Survivors also reported that several Ethiopian women and at least one Somali were raped and abused by the smugglers during the voyage from Bosaso in Somalia's Puntland region. Survivors also alleged that some Yemeni security forces confiscated their money once they reached shore."

They used to do that on slave ships when a Royal Navy warship approached.

Uh, those aren't even close to being the reasons Africa is such a troubled continent.
Promote then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.

Those smugglers have been busy. I wonder if you were a person wishing to make the trip would agree to jump overboard if trouble arose for the chance to get across. There must be more to this than this story!

Why, they didn't want to give up their African cargo to the British Royal Navy? Do you know who was running the slave trade in Africa and selling them in the US? Primarily the British.

Not to beat up on the detail but didnt Afrcan Chiefs actually facilitate alot of this?

And dont take me wrong. Im not attempting to minimize anyones participation in all of this...including the Church.

    Re: Africans thrown overboard

Yes, but they were selling them to british (as well as everybody) From there they were sending them out to agricultural areas in places like the US to turn a profit. Or really anyplace you could take a boatload of slaves and sell what they considered 'their cargo'. I think England did a lot of it because they were spread out all over the world, that being one of those places as well as the other end of the spectrum here in the US. They were pretty dominant back in those days with the shipping or trade industry. All I was getting at is the slave trade was not some isolated event in the Americas during that time. Seems like a lot of people don't realize that.

Understood. Yet the tribal chiefs benefited via the trade of other goods and services.
So the "profit/benefit" motive was pretty well spread around.
Alot of dirty hands touching the same "product" is what Im getting at.

Compare it to drug traffic. Is the ultimate consumer more/less guilty than the field hand?

Again. Dont misunderstand. It was a real low point in how things were.
Whats pathetic is it still exists.
