4 X 1gigs of ram for XP 32 bit, then Vista 32 bit
Hi all. I've read that vista really does well with 4 gigs of ram. I'm not quite ready to go vista, but I've got a great new intel system with XP Home and thought it might be nice to add the ram now, and I'll use it with vista in the future.
However, reading posts of this forum and elsewhere, I'm not sure if XP 32 bit really can benefit from 4 gigs of ram. Does anybody have a really clear understanding of how 4 gigs of ram works with XP 32 bit, and what benefits you see?
I've done my own quick google and read some MS documents. It really sounds like both XP 32 bit and even Vista 32 bit, because they are 32-bit, will see only a max of 3 gigs of ram. One really has to go to 64 bit OS to benefit from > 3 gigs of ram.
In short, if I'm understanding this correctly, it sounds like having 4 gigs of ram and using any 32-bit OS will waste 1 gig of ram, it just won't get used. That's the bottom line, it's the nature of a 32-bit OS.
I'll take this a step further, maybe setting up some discussion here. 64-bit OSes can use > 3 gigs of ram, but there are very few programs, games that utilize 64 bit OS. So at this point in time and for the forseeable future, 4 gigs of ram is really a waste. One might be better off getting 2 X 1 gig plus 2 X 512 of ram for a total of 3 gigs.
And so probably my original statement was incorrect, that vista benefits from 4 gigs of ram. Wherever I read that, and it was a reputable source, they must have been referring to vista 64-bit OS.
Sorry for the looseness of this post, but I'm just throwing out lots of ideas and impressions. That if you want to utilize lots of ram, you need a 64-bit OS, but there are few programs for 64-bit OSes, so if you stick with a 32-bit OS, don't waste your money on too much ram.
