    Re: Athlon 64 X2 3800+ OEM Socket 939 down to $90

Wow! That's probably the best price I've ever seen on 2gb's of ram. It got me thinking what I could sell my current stuff for if I was to move up to a C2D system.

    My memory

    My cpu

    My mobo

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Biostar-TForce-6...QQcmdZViewItem

Add that up and it comes to around $350 to put towards a C2D system. Basically I could go to an E6600, ram, and mobo for around $80. Decisions, decisions...

you mean the price went up or it dropped? I thought we were supposed to see major price drops in 2Q07. I'm done with buying cheap parts and am ready to invest in a quality mobo and cpu.

Price drops on AM2, these are 939. 939 are not made anymore, so once they are gone, they are gone!!

Right - just like the thread title says these are 939's. The price on the X2 3800+ Toledos had dipped to $90 but now is up to $118. It's possible the supply is getting short.

so let me ask a dumb question.. if I wanted to upgrade from a 754 socket system, should I just jump straight to AM2?

That probably would be best. The only drawback is that AM2 required DDR2 memory but I've seen it as cheap as $80 for 2GB on newegg. 939 still uses DDR but if you upgraded to 939 you probably wouldn't be able to upgrade the CPU in the future other than maybe buying a used processor. AMD isn't making 939 any more so the only CPUs that are available are already out in the retail channel. It's just a matter of time before you won't be able to find one.

I've got a 754 box and I've decided to wait just a while longer to upgrade. AM2 won't be the dead end socket that 754 turned out to be because the anticipated AM2+ processors will work in AM2 boards, although you won't gain anything. I'm willing to wait for AM2+ processors with HT3.

AM+ is the form factor for the K10 processors that you should see in stores the second half of this year.

Quad core for the desktop will probably be the most talked about but the new architecture will have many improvements and enhancements over the K8.
