    Re: GeForce 8600 GTS Review

No wonder the 7900GS and the 7x00 series are still more expensive than the dx10 8x00 cards.

Thanks for including the 7600GT for comparison. I'm really disappointed with the 8600GT's performance relative to the 7600GT. I think Nvidia missed the mark on this one.

Heh, you can get a 1950 XT for the same price, but even so, Dx10 isn't too old yet, so I can't imagine it being 100% necessary now, on top of the fact, for the price you only get 256MB and 128-bit memory, it's pretty much a flop IMO

You should get some ATI in another review to see who works out best

Great revue on the GT. Seeing as we are still looking mostly at DX9 games on peoples systems I LOVED the addition of the 7600 GT for comparison. If someone is upgrading and on a budget this card looks like it will do well, as for me it would be a step backwards from my 850XT or from my daughters 7900 GS. Still it’s a good offering in the specific market segment.

    Good job, Ryan

Are those "stream processors" on the 8x00 series the equivalent to pipes or pixel shaders on other cards?

    nice review
cards weak by expectation standards, not as weak as the gts wich drowns a bit in its category..now, whats the matter with those drivers? is it a particular engine that they dont like too much or just plain 'fresh symptomps' ? :0

    Re: GeForce 8600 GTS Review

    Excellent follow up article.

Well XFX usually puts out a nice card and this is the case here. To bad they have the underwhelming 8600 to work with. Perhaps we are just spoiled by the old Nvidia mid range cards like the 7900 GS 7600GT and even the 6800 GS/GT which were really tops in their price class. Even if you are an ATI fan boy you would have to admit that the 7600, 7900, and 6800 series of Nvidia cards did very well against ATI’s similar offerings at the time.

Maybe if DX10 was a BIG thing right now I would be giving these cards more consideration. Right now I cant Run FFXI (Which I play) on Vista so I don’t run DX10, ergo these cards have absolutely nothing I want or need. It would be a cut in performance even from my old 850XT or my daughter’s 7900GS. It would probably be better than the 5900XT in my back up system, but then again that’s an AGP card So I wont be upgrading that.

I would advise ANYONE who is not planning on running DX10 to grab a 1950XT or a 7900GS while the prices are good and there is stock available. And if you are looking for DX10 wait a bit to see what “Mid Range” cards ATI might have up their sleeve.

Once again wasn’t there some mention that ATI was going to release high, mid range, and Budget cards all at the same time with the next generation? If so that’s where I would be looking for midrange DX10 cards.

    Re: GeForce 8600 GTS Review

Hi, i found an error on the review. Its not an overclock from 1180mhz to 1500mhz, the memory from 8600 GT normal ones are 1400mhz, the Stream processor clock that are 1180mhz.

Why not get an 8800GT - it comes out tomorrow and is $250.
