Agreed, but as with most things, if it comes down to legalities it will go 'under-ground' and one way or another it usually is developed for the masses

They have to emulate DirectX to run programs in Linux, so maybe that's what he's doing, and if it's open source, it's probably okay.

You mean something like Cedega? He does mention it will enhance even Vistas version of dx10 so development will be for all OS's including windows XXX?

Be interesting to follow it's development, hope it comes into full fruition

They don't emulate anything to do what you are talking about.

In any case, I would find it hard to believe that this is what he is doing (leaving out the semantics of emulation), considering that dx9 hasn't even been fully worked out yet, though it appears that is what the claim is ("compatibility libraries" is basically the terminology that wine and cedega use)

These are the libraries they are playing with:
    d3d10.dll
    d3dx10.dll
    d3dx10_33.dll
    d3dx10d.dll
    d3dx10d_33.dll
    dxgi.dll
    nucleus.dll

    Extracted from the readme file:
    To install:
    Copy d3d10.dll, d3dx10.dll, d3dx10.dll, dxgi.dll, and Nucleus.dll to C:\windows\system32\

    To get the examples:
    1) Follow the instructions on http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/ex...alc/usingpsdk/
    2) Download and install the DirectX SDK from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

To build and run an example:
    1) Go to the Microsoft DirectX SDK folder, Samples, C++, Direct3D10, Tutorials, Tutorial12
    2) Double-click "Tutorial12_2005.sln"
    3) Select "Start Without Debugging" from the Debug menu.

There are a number of known issues with most of the tutorials, but they will all work to some extent. Tutorial 12 is currently the recommended example.

Remember this is under development so don't go fluffin about unless you know what you're doing.

Sounds cool but I doubt you will get the same graphics quality, cause it says you can run a DX 10 game even on an older DX 9 card. You may be able to run it but without all the DX 10 goodies, unless they are emulated through software which in any case will put heavy load on CPU.
Im still getting Vista and a geforce 8 by the time Crysis comes out

My bad then. I thought they emulated DX in Linux to get games that required windows to run in Linux.

This IS apparently what they are doing:

"These libraries allow the use of DirectX 10 games on platforms other than Microsoft Vista, and increase hardware compatibility even on Vista, by compiling Geometry Shaders down to native machine code for execution where hardware isn't capable of running it."

Number 1 explains it a little better than me.

As ganj said, seems like they is going to be rough on resources, especially given that its probably older hardware compared to the games we are talking about.

    .

Alternatively, you can get a DX10 card and play DX10 games on your present system (HW) on WinXP ...

Re: DIRECTX.10 PROJECT FOR ALL OS's!!

what makes or breaks this project IMO is how it will work with dx 10 cards and winxp. if they get a dx10 card and game running full featured on xp with almost no performance hit (i mean NO emulation) then we have something very useful on our hands.

running dx10 goodies emulating for older dx9 hardware is not a good idea IMO. i dont' think they could pull that off without to much of a performance hit. if they did that would be wonderful but i doubt it.
