Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 starting to make noise

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone else has owned a Hitachi Travelstar 7K60
which is a notebook hdd running at 7200RPM.

A while back I ran a Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test and lo behold it had an error.

I ignored this error and now once in a blue moon start to hear noises from my hdd.

iirc it's still under warranty but will be a pain to send to hitachi and not have my computer for a couple weeks.

    History of Drive:
    Purchased in Aug. 2004
Has had linux and ntfs partitions

    Any thoughts?

If my memory serves me correct it was a code of 0x70 which reads

"Currupted Sector A general hard disk drive problem was detected. You can run the "Erase Disk" utility. If a subsequent test fails again, the drive is defective and should be replaced."

And So I went onto "Erase Disk" after backing up my drive and it couldn't recover the lost sectors...

failure to recover bad sectors in DFT is terminal. RMA or otherwise replace the drive.

Yeh, try to do a low level format and do the scan again. If it comes bad again, then you should replace it. Hurry before the warranty expires!

I've tried the low level format twice, and all I need now is some proper packaging so I can RMA it, I think I have some plastic spacers for a 3.5" HDD, wonder if that is acceptable for a 2.5" HDD?

Also I just checked the warranty and it's good till August 19th 2007.

I recommend bubblewrap or foam peanuts. Either should be ok.

Hitachi is quite picky about shipping, both of those are on the Unacceptable list.

damn... that's a bit of a shift. I've RMA'd over a hundred 75GXP's etc over the years and they never complained. Maybe I'm the reason why they are now
