    Many questions in computational and combinatorial geometry are based on finite sets of points in the Euclidean plane. Several problems from graph theory also fit into this framework, when edges are restricted to be straight. A typical question is the prominent problem of the rectilinear crossing number (related to transport problems and optimization of print layouts for instance): What is the least number of crossings a straight-edge drawing of the complete graph on top of a set of n points in the plane obtains? Here complete graph means that any pair of points is connected by a straight-edge. Moreover we assume general position for the points, i.e., no three points lie on a common line.

    SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) is a scientific area whose goal is to detect intelligent life outside Earth. One approach, known as radio SETI, uses radio telescopes to listen for narrow-bandwidth radio signals from space. Such signals are not known to occur naturally, so a detection would provide evidence of extraterrestrial technology.
    Radio telescope signals consist primarily of noise (from celestial sources and the receiver's electronics) and man-made signals such as TV stations, radar, and satellites. Modern radio SETI projects analyze the data digitally. More computing power enables searches to cover greater frequency ranges with more sensitivity. Radio SETI, therefore, has an insatiable appetite for computing power.

    Previous radio SETI projects have used special-purpose supercomputers, located at the telescope, to do the bulk of the data analysis. In 1995, David Gedye proposed doing radio SETI using a virtual supercomputer composed of large numbers of Internet-connected computers, and he organized the SETI@home project to explore this idea. SETI@home was originally launched in May 1999.

    For more than 20 years classical spin dynamics simulational methods have proven to be a very useful tool to examine the temperature dependent magnetic properties of microscopic and mesoscopic spin arrangements. With the help of these techniques one is immediately able to calculate a wide variety of important experimentally accessible thermodynamic properties for all kinds of magnetic structures though only within a classical picture. Nevertheless, as long as a full quantum mechanically treatment is not available these calculations represent the only way to achieve any insight into the underlying physics for large structures.

    The program aims at finding many generalized binary number systems. An extensive search is performed in the finite set of matrices of given size fulfilling some necessary conditions. The difficulty is that the size of this finite set is an exponantial function of the dimension. It now seems possible to attack the case of 11 11 matrices. To check further necessary conditions the program performs a lot of floating-point calculation.

    It is hoped that one could apply the results of this research to number systems in data compression, coding or cryptography and knowing all matrices up to a given dimension could help us to a deeper understanding of the mathematics of generalized number systems.
