Question I'm sure this has been discussed before: HDDVD or Blu-Ray

Soon, I am going to get either a HD DVD player or a Blu Ray player.

From what I hear, the motion pictures association of america has chosen HD DVD to be the media standard. Is this true? If so I may get a hd dvd player.

If not I may consider just getting a PS3. May as well sence it plays Blu-ray discs...

Blu Ray seems to have an upper hand atm, but it's too close to make a purchase now, imho.

I was seeing that Blockbuster will stop stocking HD DVD's and carry Blu Ray exclusively....it's possibly the start of a leaning, I dunno this stuff can be so fickle. You probably don't remember VHS and Beta Max, huh?

Beta Max was a better picture, too. Didn't seem in the end to matter in the least, however.

Blu ray has better quality? Really, cause when I went to best buy, I though HD DVD had an edge. Hmm, I dunno. About what I would pick, its to close to call, and well DVD FTW! It really is too early, I probably won't make the move until there is an actual winner

I really can't say which is better, I've never seen them side by side, picture for picture. I do know BluRay disks can store a buttload of data! 50 GB on one disk!!

Re: I'm sure this has been discussed before: HDDVD or Blu-Ray

People really shouldn't correlate Blu-Ray's larger storage capacity with better video quality. A lot of Blu-Ray disks still use MPEG2 encoding, which is inferior to the VC-1 system used on most HD DVDs. That said, more Blu-Ray releases are starting to use VC-1 or the equally good H.264 now too. If the encoding is the same, picture wise there is nothing in it between the formats.

I won't be buying a stand alone player until they can play both formats as standard.

BluRay as HDDVD will show its limits in the next generation of HD movies. There's companies out there working on 2048P hardware for the masses at the moment.
