When they started school, (I have three sons) I started giving them my hand-me-downs. By high school they all had rigs as good as mine. Birthdays and Christmas are upgrade time. Now that they either finished or are in college, they all have newer boxes than mine.

I built a system for my daughter for her eighth birthday, It has turned out to be one of the best things I could have done for her future.

    Re: 1st PC. What age?

Our 3 kids have a pc profile each since they turned 3. We have a lan connected p3-667 and they play educational games like the magic school bus series and coordination games from the popcap range. Our oldest turned 8 today and she has been using the pc for homework resources pretty much since she started school. Their pc is blocked from net access normally and we supervise when they are online...
For the most part one pc is enough for them and we dont have any game consoles.

    Re: 1st PC. What age?

My son had an Apple IIc with their little 9" green-screen monitor when he was about 5-1/2.

I worked for a dealership and Apple regularly ran sales incentive programs around Christmas. I sold about 60 of them during a 10-week period, and ended up getting the unit for free, and came just shy of a second one.

In second grade he was tutoring 1st-graders in computer & keyboard skills.

Now he's 30 and slings pizzas for a living. Go figure.
    His: Windows 7 64-bit on MSI X58 Pro-E, i7 950, Radeon 4870 1G, 300G Velociraptor + 2250G other SATA, 12G RAM; Windoze Home Server on MSI K9N SLI Platinum, A64 X2 6000, nVidia 7900, 2TB SATA storage

Hers: Vista Home 64-bit on Toshiba Core-2 Duo Laptop

The dog: he'd rather go to the off-leash park now that I won't let him pee on Intel units.

No kids of my own, but I started playing games on the family's Commodore 64 when I was maybe 3 or 4 years old (the year would have been 1987 or 1988). By the time I was 5 or 6 I could mimic very simple BASIC apps, change values in existing apps to change graphics and calculations, and was learning to debug things.

    Re: 1st PC. What age?

I built the first one for myself in 2002 (Dragon1 in sig) and my second build for myself in 2004 (Dragonslayer in sig). I plan on building another one in 2008 and I'm planning on giving my old one (Dragonslayer minus the Lian-Li case) to my son, who will be three years old in Jan. 2008. I figure I can start him on kid games and the online kid sites (Sesame Street, Thomas the Train, etc.). I probably don't have to worry about blocking any internet sites until he gets a bit older. What do you think? Do they make smaller mice for little kids?

Uhh, my parents knew less than a monkey about computers. I built my first one on my own when I was in 8th grade, so 13 years old or so.
