once a month with default windows defrag.

If you have a small drive for os/apps and use NTFS filesystem, it isn't necessary to defrag it very frequently.

On my main rig my 36GB Raptor I defrag quite often. It's only got one platter and gets fragmented easily. Probably twice a month, but the improvement is noticeable. My storage array only gets defragmented about once every two months. Not much changes on that.

Monthly on my winbloze rig is plenty. It isn't used for much except coming here and some photo work when I have some time to burn.

If you're using Diskeeper, you should set it to auto and it'll defrag daily or even several times per day according to need. Runs in the background and does not affect performance when it's running. If you wish, you can set it to be active only during certain hours.

Weekly for Windows NTFS. Edit: Using Diskkeeper 8.0

I've yet to defrag any of my Linux (ext2 or ext3) drives. Some are several years old and haven't seen any performance drop.

Using O&O not very often. Keeping the page file set to one size (ie 2042-2042 not 1356-2042) doesn't make much need. One time defrag offline to get the page file moved to the right spot is about all it takes. I have my utorrent set to preallocate. Also plenty of ram means the page file is hardly used.

I voted less than 4 times a year but i use O&O defrag and it is set to auto so im not really sure how often it does it's thing. The last manual run was about 4 months ago after i did a big cleanout and shuffle of the drives. The biggest gains i get are from using bootvis to optomise startup files on the boot disk.

I have left Diskeeper 2007 on auto mode, and it automatically defragments when it determines that fragmentation has crossed some threshold . So, I would guess it runs for a few mins every day. So far, it has been doing a great job.

Actually, it uses some algorithm which is based on the results of the previous defrag. So if the previous defrag was more involved, it'll schedule the next one sooner. Twice a day is pretty typical for a system volume, daily or every 2-3 days is typical for storage volumes.
