Usually once every week or two. I just went a week and noticed O&O said that the C drive was over 8% fragmented already.

Nobody's questioning Srea's intelligence and nobody's argued about what he has to say here And yes, there is a language barrier.

You know, I find that comment quite degrading. How many languages do you speak?

Depends on my usage patters. As often as 10 times a day, or as rarely as twice a year.

    I use PerfectDisk 7 and JKDegfrag 3.16.

That wasn't my point. Just that sometimes he is criticized for his lack of english and if people took the time to read and understand what he his saying they may learn something.

Anyway I defrag my os hdd 2x a week and my storage drive 1x a month using DK 9

I'm sure most of us do read his posts with a view to learning something new. The catch is when members continue pressing contentious issues others lose interest.

I read about that new DX thing in one of the links from Ezzo's Vista thread. Interesting read.

Here's the redist download page for those who are interested (No validation required):
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...7-8fee451bf952

If I had 500GB drives, they'd only be for storage. I wouldn't put more than one partition on them. I'd want all the free space to be at the slowest part of the drive. Better to layer the data when you put it on there, according to importance and also bandwidth requirements, then defragment. Also use a good folder structure.

If I did use a 500GB drive as an OS drive for a PC with no other hard drives, yes I would create a fairly small OS partition (as you suggest to do) - but speed would not be the reason. It would purely be to seperate my personal data from the OS so that if I needed to reformat/reinstall the OS, I wouldn't have to move all of my data. In my experience, the overall speed gains from partitioning the drives the way you suggest are not enough for me to consider doing purely for the purpose of having a faster OS - especially since the rest of the data is forced onto much slower parts of the drive. I'd prefer to put the OS on a Raptor (single partition) 'cos (from my experience) I know they're much faster across the board than consumer class drives.

This is the operative statement. How productive defragmentation might be for each system depends on how people use it and the way it is set up - number of drives, size of drives, how they are partitioned, etc. For some people, it is isn't practical to defragment frequently. If you're only a light user, you might only experience a tiny amount of file fragmentation over a whole month. In some cases you can probably get rid of fragmented files simply by clearing out your cache folders.

It's interesting to see that nobody's mentioned defragmenting the Master File Table (MFT data). I find that doing this alone on a fairly fragmented drive can yield as much perfomance gain as defragmenting the files themselves. But that's just my experiences on my own rig. I use a 36GB Raptor (single platter) for my OS, so just about any change from defragmenting is easily noticeable.

Most of it makes sense to me. But ot Vista does it once a week for me. I do not have to remember to do it anymore.

I think my drive is fragmented beyond repair Its totally red. I thought this doesnt affect performance in anyway, that most people dont bother till the system actually became slow. Well, now with my system crawling and no space on the drive, i think its similar to rushing a patient to the hospital when the disease is at its final stages.

Did you buy the maintenance with this, and is it worth the extra $38?
