Off-topic, but something I remember from my aerospace days...

The first two B-1's to go down were taken out by birds while they were flying low in test flights. Apparently, they can kill an engine and the computers can't react quick enough when they're flying real low and fast with automatic terrain following stuff on.

In reaction, the USSR (or Russia, I forget the time frame) moved goose farms to their borders.

You worked aerospace also Dutch? Funny. I hammered on jets for 6 years USAF... got my A&P lic.. all that fun stuff.

And yes.. a good size bird can completely trash a jet pretty easily. We used to dread getting bird strike engines in the hangar in the summer... phew... stinko. Thing about the B1 flying at mach 1+ is you cannot hear it until it is already past(BOOM). Those geese would have to be directly in the flight path and airborne at the time... not likely. Ice was a bigger enemy of B1 motors for reasons that are obvious if you think about what elements make an aircraft stealthy.

^^^ Yeah... my job was selling anything that's big, moves and never been built before... B-2 static test silencers, B-1 assembly facility stuff, cranes at the shuttle sites, missile manipulators, Harrier run-up platforms, stuff like that. It put me at lots of Air Force bases, White Sands, Yuma, places like that. I was a suit... now I don't own one...

Great track. Like the Goldfinger version too.

I used to buy aircraft parts for the Royal Air Force. Including plenty of desert coloured aircraft covers for Gulf War 1

We used to have an '1991 Iraqi calendar' on the wall that ended on January 15th. (the day the ultimatum ran out on what was then the world's 4th largest army)

'Twas my then 18 year old son that put me on to the Goldfinger version couple of years back....which led me to investigate the lyrics for some weird reason...WOW - they are just entirely too coincidental to let pass......

Nena - 99 Red Balloons Lyrics

    In German:

Hast du etwas Zeit für mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich
    Von 99 Luftballons
    Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Denkst du vielleicht g'rad an mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich
    Von 99 Luftballons
Und dass so was von so was kommt

    99 Luftballons
    Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Hielt man für Ufos aus dem All
    Darum schickte ein General
    'ne Fliegerstaffel hinterher
Alarm zu geben, wenn es so wär
    Dabei war'n da am Horizont
    Nur 99 Luftballons

    99 Düsenjäger
    Jeder war ein großer Krieger
    Hielten sich für Captain Kirk
    Das gab ein großes Feuerwerk
    Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft
    Und fühlten sich gleich angemacht
    Dabei schoss man am Horizont
    Auf 99 Luftballons

    99 Kriegsminister -
    Streichholz und Benzinkanister -
    Hielten sich für schlaue Leute
    Witterten schon fette Beute
    Riefen Krieg und wollten Macht
    Mann, wer hätte das gedacht
    Dass es einmal soweit kommt
    Wegen 99 Luftballons

    99 Jahre Krieg
    Ließen keinen Platz für Sieger
    Kriegsminister gibt's nicht mehr
    Und auch keine Düsenflieger
    Heute zieh' ich meine Runden
Seh' die Welt in Trümmern liegen
    Hab' 'nen Luftballon gefunden
Denk' an dich und lass' ihn fliegen

    In English:

You and I in a little toy shop
    Buy a bag of balloons
    With the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone
Back at base, bugs in the software
    Flash the message
    "Something's out there"
    Floating in the summer sky
    99 red balloons go by

    99 red balloons
    Floating in the summer sky
    Panic bells, it's red alert
    There's something here
    From somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
    Opens up one eager eye
    Focusing it on the sky
Where 99 red balloons go by

    99 Decision Street
    99 ministers meet
    To worry, worry, super-scurry
Call the troops out in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The president is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by

    [Instrumental Interlude]

    99 Knights of the airway
    Ride super-high-tech jet fighters
    Everyone's a Silverhero
    Everyone's a Captain Kirk
    With orders to identify
    To clarify and classify
    Scramble in the summer sky
As 99 red balloons go by

As 99 red balloons go by

    99 dreams I have had
In every one a red balloon
It's all over and I'm standin' pretty
In this dust that was a city
If I could find a souvenier
Just to prove the world was here
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go

    Re: 99 Red Balloons

The German language version flows better to the music. Which is why the lead singer for Goldfinger had a school mate teach him German for the next to the last verse.....

I agree. I kept replaying the German part of the Goldfinger version. I think the German language sounds quite good sung - unlike French. But then I like German bands like Rammstein & Eisbreicher.
