    Graphics System

A co-worker of mine has a vinyl graphics business (race cars, semi trailers, ect). He asked me to build him a new system. I've built about 30 basic systems for friends, nothing fancy mostly gaming rigs.

The programs and files he works with are huge and require alot of memory. He's currently running a P4 3.0GHz w/4GB DDR, XP Pro. When he tries to work with large files his system slows to a crawl.

Some of the programs he uses are Corel X3, Photoshop CS3. He showed me this system as an example: Monster System

My question is do those programs (any programs actually) really utilize the full power of a quad core/dual quad core CPU and 8GB of RAM?

Also does Windows XP 64bit utilize RAM amounts over 4GB? Does Vista?

I apologize for the long winded question. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated

How large are the files, mekanic?

I think it could be done for less than half that, Jim.

Sure it can. I just wanted to establish some common elements.
The main one being that perhaps a quad Q6600 for this sort of workstation may not be the way to go. And also there is a different video card demand as well.
But lets horse with this abit....because like you Bob...I think a "workstation" configuration would be a cool thing for Ryan to consider.
And I say that because I know for fact we have guys that come here that are heavy into particular type arrangements.

$2k....let me see what I can do. Do you need a monitor, or other input devices? If so....$2k really limits the system.

Couldn't get to under $2k, but this will be pretty awesome. Obviously there is room for wiggle here, less video card, no RAID, already have OS...that keeps it flexible for you. The bottom line is this would be a blazingly fast Intel based quad core (dual core isn't much less) rig that will blow his socks off and look really slick. (I love the Antec case, used it many times for real professional looks) As well, if he likes Silver? You can change the case color and put in a different color DVDRW drive.
Here is the wish list, saved from New Egg. They are a very reputable online retailer with a great service after sale record and fast shipping.

    Summary:
Antec P182 Gun Metal Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case: $139.99

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3P Rev 2.0 LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Ultra Durable 2, Ultra Cooling Intel Motherboard: $157.99

BFG Tech BFGR88768GTXOC2E GeForce 8800GTX 768MB 384-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card: $579.99

    PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad (Black) EPS12V 750W Power Supply:$179.99

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80562Q6600:$287.99

    CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-8500C5D (4 GB Total...yes, XP

PRO 64 bit recognizes all of it
    ):$362.00

Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive 5 year warranty! (2 running in RAID): $359.98

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3500630AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive 5 year warranty! (Data Storage only, no OS on this):$119.99

    LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model LH-20A1L-06: $36.99

    Microsoft Windows XP Professional 64Bit SP2C - OEM: $139.99

    Sub total: $2,364.90

Not sure where it is being shipped...but an estimate would be:a whopping $11.44 and as far as I can see, the mail-in rebates are $100.00 if you buy the Corsair memory delivered to 2 different addresses.

    Hope this helps!

Happy to help. If you need to tweak anything (cost wise) let me know, we'll see where we can shave something to still give him exceptional performance.

Sunnyvale? Well, been awhile since I've been down there! You are a diesel mechanic?
