    From Pc To Linux

First of all i wanna say im a total Linux newbie and i stumpled over this site by cheer cooincidence and was hoping i could get a little starter help from you guys

First of all which linux out there is best and most userfriendly for windows people like myself? Ubuntu? Kubuntu? Mepis? etc...

I think i want to try out the new Kubuntu 7.10 (if noone here says i should get another off course) and i have a few issues that wear heavily on my mind:

    - How do i get my emails, contacts and settings from my windows xp incredimail client to whatever client e.g. Kubuntu uses?

    - Will i still be able to run Windows applications and games in any of them?
(I use different programs like torrent downloading programs, games like world of warcraft, and stuff like that).

Hope any of you can help

    Thanks

    Re: From Pc To Linux

Hi wenneberg, and welcome to PCPer Linux forums

If you ask 10 different people which is the best Linux distro, you'll likely get 10 different answers. The simple answer to your question is to try a few different Linux distro's and see which is right for you - only you will know this

Ubuntu/Kubuntu is a great place to start as it's popular and therefore there's lots of great resources available for getting help.

Linux is all about choice, and sometimes the choice can be overwhelming for a new user. For example, there are dozens of email clients available. However, the main two options are Mozilla's Thunderbird which hopefully you may be familiar with from Windows, or Evolution which is more of an Outlook type replacement. You will need to check if your current email client (incredimail) is able to export in a format either of these is able to use, then you'll be able to export all your existing mail.

There are ways of running Windows apps in Linux, but generally we'd advise that it's far better to find a good Linux alternative. If you really need to keep running the occasional Windows app, then I'd suggest a dual boot setup or keep an old Windows box around for those occasions.

Linux has torrent programs too For example, azureus is a Java based bittorrent client so is platform independent.

    Hope that helps

WOW is suppose to work in Linux without the need of WINE. never played so i can't say for sure. Ubuntu is really easy to setup (i assume the same for Kubuntu). You might take a look at PCLinuxOS it is windows like.

    Re: From Pc To Linux

    ^^ what they said.

Although I will add that, for me anyway, it's easier to run Windows in VMware, so then I don't have to reboot, if for some awful reason I HAVE to use a version of Windows, hehe.

As for your email -- same thing, pretty much any client will do if you want to "move" your current windows client email - you will most likely need to export them into a common format such as a comma separated text file, then import them to your Linux client, most distro's come with at least Mozilla, Thunderbird, and Evolution, you just enter your in/out servernames same as you do in Windows.

I can't help you with gaming as I don't game in Linux, but I understand Wine works pretty good for most games.
