Quebec to propose legislation to bar veiled women from voting

2 hours, 14 minutes ago MONTREAL (AFP) - The Quebec provincial government said Saturday it was planning to introduce draft legislation that would ban Muslim women from voting in provincial elections if their face is fully veiled.

A similar proposal was introduced in Canada's federal parliament on Friday.
Quebec cabinet member Benoit Pelletier, who is responsible for reform in the province's democratic institutions, said the draft that will be introduced on Thursday "will be good for all of Quebec."
The debate over the veil erupted last September, during federal by-elections in Quebec.
Several days before the vote, the Elections Canada commission laid down rules, under which fully veiled women could vote without showing their faces.
The rules led to a political clash, particularly in Quebec, which is involved in a major debate about integration of immigrants.
Leading political parties have asked Elections Canada to bar fully veiled people from voting places, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper even had to comment on the issue while on a visit to Australia, saying he was in deep disagreement with the Elections Canada procedure.
But general elections manager Marc Mayrand refused to budge.
He said there was nothing in the current law that would permit asking Muslim women to remove their veils before voting, and said that members of parliament should consider changing the law, if that was what they wanted to achieve.
The proposed federal measure would bar people with veiled faces from polling places.
The federal draft provides for only one exception: bandages on the face worn for medical reasons, for example, after surgery.
But in that case, voters must present two proofs of identity or be accompanied by a qualified elector able to vouch for them.

this way someone dont vote 50 times. makes sense.

And no postal votes unless you're actually out of the country.

Too easy for the patriarch to fill them all in the way he wants to vote.

We had problems with this and postal vote rigging in our last general election.

Do Muslim women even get to vote in their native countries? (assuming they immigrated of course)

In some, yes. Pakistan had a female prime minister, for instance.
Promote then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.

That's too bad. I enjoy absentee voting. Give me a ballot and a cold beer over a ballot and a booth.

In fact we passed a 'permanent absentee' voter role last year. I intend to get on that list.

Postal voting is fine in theory, but too open to abuse in practice.

Of course, apparently it's an attack on muslims, since there's NO REASON other than prejudice that the government would come up with some stupid law like "we have to actually see your face before you can vote"
