I think the shader clock doubled. I wonder what kind of performance increase that will amount to.

Yeah i was contemplating getting a 2600XT for a while now, but i think I will skip this generation and get a HD3 series card after new year once prices in NZ are only 1 1/2 x that in the US![]()

Yep thats true. But comparing it to 2600xt isn't fair considering that 3870 was supposed to be competing with 8800gt but hell, 8800gt is much more powerful it seems. But at a reasonable pricepoint, the 3870 wont be a bad choice either (low power consumption, great performance and great pricing).
Better wait for 880gt 256mb version and see if the 38XX does stand a chance in terms of price/performance.
Problem with the 8800gt is availability. You will have to pay 300$ to get one at the moment. Hopefully, the 3870 will be in good supply and you can nab some for even under the MSRP.

Yep, the reviews are rolling out.
Gigabyte P55A-UD4P, Core i7-860 Lynnfield at 3.6GHz, ZALMAN CNPS10X QUIET 120mmCPU HSF, CORSAIR Vengeance (2 x 4GB) DDR3 at 1640, PowerColor HD5870, Earthworks 650W PSU, Kingston HyperX 120g SSD (W7 64-bit), 1TB Black Caviar storage, LiteOn DVD burner, Antec 902 case [B]

Simply put, 3870 would replace any 8600gts, and any 8800gts 320mb. It would not however come close to the 8800gt once the prices hit less than $250
By then itll probably be even cheaper. Sub200$ likely and the 3850 will probably be 150$.

By then as in December 2007?
Once the GT/256mb comes out it's open warfare and lower margins for both companies!

Even when the 256mb version releases. Who can guarantee that there wont be another shortage? I mean, if you can only make and ship 40,000 512mb versions, what are the odds you can ship 400,000 256mb versions?
