Sub, I did a little research and found out a few things:

- Some say the Onkyo 606 degrades video quality when upconverting, enough to notice.

- Based on what I've read TOSlink doesn't have enough bandwidth for the HD audio formats. So even though that the new Panasonic BD35K decodes the HD audio formats in Blu-Ray you still need a receiver which processes both audio and video over HDMI to actual get those formats in full HD 7.1. If you have such a receiver I believe it doesn't actually need to support those HD audio formats since it's receiving the audio already decoded by the BD35K over HDMI.

- Unfortunately for me my Onkyo SR505 only passes video over HDMI (discarding the audio) so I'm limited to standard DD5.1 and DTS formats regardless of where the decoding takes place because my audio always much travel over TOSlink.

in that case you could get the 606 and just not use it to upconvert (though it may not be an option you can enable/disable)

or there's always the dg820, or 720 which only accepts LPCM but will accept all 8 channels. the 720 doesn't do decoding

i'd recommend the 820, just so you have the decoding if you need it.

just about everything you need to know is in that thread about the 820 and 720 should you decide to get one.

of course if you only have a 5.1 setup you will probably be fine with the receiver you have and get that bd35. i don't remember if you said you had a 7.1 speaker setup or not.

I have a 7.1 speaker setup. My receiver will take just about any input and convert it to 7.1. That works very well with 5.1 sources like DD and DTS.

Another thing I just remembered from my research was that they said the audio quality increase from DD / DTS 5.1 to the HD Audio formats isn't huge. It's there but it's not as significant as you would think. I'm sure it would be noticably. Just a matter of deciding if that alone is worth buying a new receiver.

I have the 606 and I use pass through for everything. If I need my DVD's unconverted I put them in the PS3 for regular stuff, especially the kids cartoons etc I don't worry about it.

The sound is great, 4 HDMI, 2 zone, night mode for when the 5.1 is too much I have to say I'm very happy with it and the prices on the 606 are great.

dang, trying to remember what i didn't like about the 606 and i'm coming up with a blank, there had to be something!

receiver sounds like a good one, seems to have what my 820 does plus the upconverting, not too worried about zones though.

some people have been having issues with a hum in the 606 but only with PS3 and HDMI I for one did not have the issue. Some also say it gets hot, but again most AVR do and if you have proper ventilation should not be a problem.

it was something feature wise. maybe lacked something my 820 has or something, maybe i'm wrong though?
