    HPET bios option

I have seen this option in the newer boards , "HPET" ( high precision event timer) and used it in windows xp. I just got a new asus mobo and in the manual it says "disable for windows xp"
I do see that windows XP does support this as I see it in my device manager
so I am looking for straight answers on this bios option concerning windows xp
what does it do and what benifits of using this option ?
