    Locked FSB on Intel E8400?

    Good evening,
I am experiencing a problem with my new Intel E8400 CPU. The problem is that my CPU does not appear to accept a FSB higher than 333. On my MB an Gigabyte GA-X38-Ds4 you can change the FSB to say 340 and this setting does not change after you set it, however when you boot it is always 333 regardless of the bios setting. Can anyone offer me some advice please?

How are you changing the fsb - BIOS or Windows software?

How are you measuring the fsb afterwards?

Re: Locked FSB on Intel E8400?

I have tried both, normally I only over clock through the BIOS however when this failed to work I loaded a Gigabyte program called Easy Tune5 Pro that runs in the windows environment, this program also had no effect on the FSB speed.
To check the actual FSB I a) observed post information which always displays 333x9 regardless of what you set in the bios, and b) used a program called System information which is another Gigabyte program that came with my MB.
it will always display "Current frequency 2999.97 MHZ CPU FSB 333.33". In addition I have tried the latest bios I could find from Gigabyte x38ds4.f2 however this did not help.

First of all, you were right o go with BIOS to change settings - and I suggest you stay with it.

Second, most reliable way to see the fsb is CPU-Z. Report back with what that says.

CPU-Z reports a FSB of 340!!! (insert astonished expression)
I must say I have never known the Bios post to be incorrect, but as they say there is a first for everything. Thank you for your help Meridian and I have some overclocking to do (yay) :-)
    Kind Regards
    J.
