    Athlon 5200+ (F3) vs 5000+ BE (G2) vs mysetup ?

I currently have an X2 4200+ overclocked to 2.8Ghz with the stock cooler.

I want to upgrade the CPU without spending too much money, and I do not want to spend money on extra cooling.

    So...

How far would I be able to push the 5200+ or the 5000+BE with the stock cooler?

I do not want to get another CPU if I am only going to get 3Ghz (200Mhz more than I have now).

If I get another CPU it should do 3.1 - 3.3 Ghz.

Would I be better off getting a cooler for my current CPU and trying to push it to 3Ghz ?

New CPU + new heatsink/fan is not an option. I could stay with my current setup and not buy anything.

I know the 5200+ is faster than the 5000+ clock for clock because it has twice the cache. However, I also know that the 5200+ runs hotter than the 5000+ and with stock cooling I might not be able to get it very high.

All things considered (including my ability to get 2.8Ghz from my chip on stock cooling), I am leaning towards the 5200+ that has more cache. I would be happy with that chip at 3.1 Ghz. It would be 300Mhz faster than what I have and it would have twice the cache. Also, a month or two down the line I could get a better cooler (cooler is not an option now, but down the line maybe)

    What would you do?

Better yet.. should I be patient and get a Phenom 9850 when it comes out, and overclock that?

what vcore are you using to get your 2800mhz?

The bios setting I use is 1.35V and CPU-Z says I am at 1.392V.

Just for the record, the Athlon that I have right now is an F2 stepping.

    i've got a pretty average 5000-be.

i have a ecs ka3 that max vcore of 1.36v with that cpu. results 3050mhz and i would say heat was never an issue.

today it's in a ecs 770 with a opty(70mm fan) cooler which i've mounted a 4000rpm fan. temps accuracy seem within reason using core temp. i can get 3100@cpuz vcore reading of 1.42v 30c/34c core temp. if i lower the fan rpm to 1800rpm temps run 42c/47c. all numbers are under load. edit: i've since upped the vcore to 1.47 and the multi to 16. temps are 35/41c with the fan on high. just ran up the the htt to 245 and the temps are the same. i'm thinking the readings are low by 10 or more. with that voltage and oc, heat should be showing up. i know that modded cooler isn't working that good.

thing with the be, you can get 3050mhz with very little vcore but to get my max of 322x i need 1.47v and temps will run in the mid 50's.

    hope that helps a little.

I have a 5000+ BE running happily at 3GHz with nothing more than raising the multiplier to 15x on a MSI K9N SLI with stock cooling. I haven't tried messing with the FSB as of yet. I'm pretty sure I could get more out of it by pushing the FSB with a slight voltage increase.
