Resolved Dial up modems and Ubuntu

Yes I know, bad subject but has anyone here recently set up a Ubuntu computer that uses a dial up 56 kb/s modem ? Is there a list of possible modems ? Do they all have to be hardware based rather than winmodems ? TIA, SC

Some winmodems do work. They tend to be called Linmodems when used under Linux though. I have an Intel Linmodem on my Ubuntu laptop that I have never tried to get working. I have no dial-up access that I can try it out with. But I'm pretty sure the default install did not configure it properly.

I did a bit of googling and found this site. It may has a list of a few linmodem chipsets that are compatible and have links to other sites that may help you out with installing the drivers.

If you are looking at buying a new modem, I would suggest to buy an external modem that you can connect via a COM port. They are all hardware modems which makes installation much easier. The only real down side to them is the cost.

Super, thanks Spankin ! Yeah I have no dial up here either but a client wants a cheaper computer and he lives in the boonies, no DSL he says.
