Linux work ok with the Pheonoms?

I'm about to get a quad core pheonom and probably an AMD 790X or 780G chipset. Does anyone have a setup like that running? If so, have you tried it with Ubuntu 8.4 betas?

Note - this will be my new VM Server so I'm open to other distros, I'm just most comfortable with Ubuntu.

You should be able to get 790FX/SB600 working in Ubuntu 7.10 without any issues as they are fully supported by kernel 2.6.22. However for 780G/SB700, you will need 2.6.24 for full support. Since Ubuntu 8.4 Beta ships with 2.6.25, my guess is that it will work.

Make sure the board has at least 5 Phase Power or it will more than likely go up in smoke in short order. There aren't many boards that can properly handle Quad Phenoms at present as most have only 4 Phase (or even worse 3 Phase) power circuits. The 9850E seems to be especially troublesome.

Re: Linux work ok with the Pheonoms?

It's not so much a case of if Linux will work with quad core pheonoms, as the motherboards/chipsets in which they reside.

Linux will easily recognize and support any quad core i686 (or x86-64) compatible chip. However, if the motherboard chipset isn't supported then you're in for a hard time. BTW, multi-core support is dependent upon ACPI so a buggy bios or having to disable ACPI in Linux to get the thing to boot takes you back to a single core

If you need the latest hardware support, then Ubuntu is probably as good a choice as anything (re Parn's comments above )

Get it working and I'm sure you'll love it. My VMware Server resides on a Intel quad core CentOS box running at 4 x 3.2GHz and it absolutely flies with whatever you throw at it

I have Gentoo, kernel 2.6.24 running on an Asus M3A with a Phenom 9500 and a Phenom 9600 running Debian on an Asus M2A-VM with no issues. I had an MSI AM2+ board with the Phenom 9500 and I couldn't get it to fold.
