The original models with a GD suffix are out of production, yes. The current generation rappys have substantially better performance.

Looks like there will be a 150GB model in the Velociraptor series. The mfr code is WD1500GLFS. I did a search on this code with Google and the WD website came on top with the direct link to the page of Velociraptor 150GB (however atm this link actually re-directs to WD homepage).

sounds good, i'd rather the 300gb myself but the price is waaaaay too much.

once i get steam and all my steam games installed as well as a few others hdd space diminishes quickly. my 500gb vista drive already has over 100gb on it and i've been running it only a few weeks.

btw i know 500gb is big for an os drive, but hell storage is cheaaaaap, and i needed a new drive just to make installing vista easier, so to best buy i went and this baby was the right price.

Got three in on Thursday. I'm running them in RAID 0 off a 790i Ultra I also recently purchased. I've got some debugging to do so performance is still up in the air for me.

Have you guys heard if you can remove them from the heatsink and install it in a 2.5" firewire 800 enclosure? If so what could be the downfall? Power consumption? Heat?

    Re: WD VelociRaptor 300GB

I'm having a weird issue with my velociraptor RAID array....its running RAID 0 on ICH9R with 32K stripe.

Whenever my wife logs off and I then log on (or vice versa) the system seems to hang once the logon screen goes away and I can see the desktop....it will do this for about 10 seconds, and then I'll hear a click (sometimes 2) which sounds like it is coming from the drive(s), and then all will be well again.

Overall the speed of the setup is great, but I really don't like hearing this clicking noise coming from my $600 RAID setup....and while I can deal with the mild annoyance of a 10 second delay upon logging on, I don't think I should have to.

So I wonder if this is a hard drive issue or an ICH9R issue? Speeds in HDtach are what I would expect (215mb/s average, 420mb/s burst) so I don't think there is any real problem with the drives....I just wonder if they are spinning down at logoff for some reason? I've also noticed that on a system failure when I've been OCing too hard, upon reboot it will do the same thing....it'll hang at the RAID screen, I'll hear a click or two, and then all is well again.

    Re: WD VelociRaptor 300GB

That does strike me as some kind of power management problem. Have you double checked all related settings in the BIOS, and in windows?? I'll check into possible jumper settings on the drives shortly.

    Re: WD VelociRaptor 300GB

Man on these DFI boards....there are so many goddam settings I don't even know where to begin. Usually I end up disabling most of them....

I don't think these drives even have jumpers....

I too think it is a power thing.....like the drives are spinning down, and then all of a sudden they spin back up....I imagine that is what the clicking is.

Just checked WD's site - nothing about jumpers on these buggers. Check in the windows system settings under power management and make sure all that crap is disabled.
