It's not only hybrids, it's the whole small used car market as well. Prices are 2 -3 times more than what they were just 1 year ago.

Yeah on car prices. I also read one of the few articles that talks about the financial wisdom of running out and buying that small car.

Yeah, CNN was commenting along those lines a day or two ago. Makes sense.

Yeah. Sometimes people have to slow down and really do the math....even if dumping the gas hog seems like an "in" idea. If the premise is to save real money dumping one car [at a depressed price] and jumping into a new deal....its going to be a loooong payback.
Often hanging on to what you have is a better idea than getting involved with payments
etc that simply cant be justified by gas savings over the long haul.

I guess you all don't like supply and demand. I bet you all jump at sale prices on slow moving items but you don't like it when it is the other way around.

You want a real laugh? Check out prices on used VW Jetta diesels. They're going for $22-23k...with 40-70k miles on them. Keep in mind they cost around $22k new! People get stupid with this gas thing. I mean sure I can see wanting to get a more fuel efficient car, but like BWM says, do the math!

lol at all of the people buying hybrids

they are actually LOOSING money, you will never make up for fuel savings

it takes about 10 years to start saving money from fuel costs, and thats when the battery dies on them, THEN they need to replace the battery, which is VERY costly

oh yeah, did i forget to mention that it takes more economic resources to build one of those prius things than it does to build a hummer?

lets go green, and destroy the environment faster, great idea

Come buy them in Canada Small cars were always the dominant segment here, and supply was relatively plentiful, so used car prices are reasonable. I just sold my 7 y.o Sentra for 5000$.

Too bad US$ is worth crap now

    Re: More price gouging

Someone at work did the math and at the cost of gas he could save nearly $150/mo in gas alone. Nearly enough for a car payment. Sure sounds like they are on the better side of things there, esp considering the depreciation a van has compared to a hybrid and that will only get better as gas prices continue to rise.

    Re: More price gouging

I still think you are better off holding off a year or two before buying a hybrid. Ford announced deep cuts to their van/SUV/truck production lineup, and I assume the General will follow. We should see production shift towards small and mid-sized sedans soon. Who knows, maybe the station wagon will become affordable and common soon, instead of being a high end German product.

Price gouging has always been an issue on limited production cars. It used to be the domain of rare exotics and luxury cars, but now it has hit hybrids.
