    Question A little advice please.

I have 2 more of the old machines in the farm sold next week. After I get back from vacation in 4 weeks I plan to add 2 more Quads. I can go with the Q6600 or the Q9300. The current CPU prices are Q6600, 169 and Q9300 is 219 or about a %25 difference. Can anybody tell me how much difference there is in performance running Boinc at stock speeds?

I've been looking at building a new computer myself and as far as I've found everywhere the q9450 is about 10% increase over the q6600. The q9300 as far as i could find almost sounds like a toss up. The pros less power less heat. the neg slightly better performance but costs more. Thats my $.02

not really boinc related, but may help you with your decision.

All things being equal, I'd go for the one that has a lower power usage...... you have to look at power costs in addition to purchase price..... but on the other hand, not sure if the extra cost of the Q9300 is worth it.

good luck, and let us know your decision and why.

Power consumption is not a factor. These will run at the shop where I work and we get our "Juice" for free. It is strictly a price versus performance decision. Thanks for the feedback so far.

It's a Cache issue as well, AFAIK it makes little diff in BOINC when you get up to 4 MB, huh?

for what its worth, I'd have to agree with your assesment. The two are so close, why would you pay more or one over the other.....

    Re: A little advice please.

I had really hoped for a side by side comparission such as Q6600 2500 credits a day and Q9300 2800 credits a day on the same project. I found this and it looks like they are about even. I think I will go with the Q6600 simply on the basis of costs. Of course that could change in the next 3 weeks. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Well I did it. I built a new quad with the Q9300 just so I could compare it with the Q6600. They both are at stock speeds and have everything not needed turned off. They are both running Milkyway and will take a few days to get a correct average. One is still running an Orbit WU and the other is new.

    The Q9300 is here.

They really do look equal as far as I can see....
