    IP Problem can anyone help

Hello, I have set up my internet connection which uses a cable modem connected to a Netgear RP614 v2 router.

My problem is that i am unable to find an external ip address that can be connected to on an external computer. I have gone on whatsmyip on the net and that ip address does not work and ipconfig/all only gives me my internal ip address.

is it possible to get an ip address that can be connected to via the router or have i just not set it up correctly. I will be greatful for any help you can give.

You definitely have an IP address if you are connected to the Internet so try using other sites to obtain the IP, one of them should work.

If the sites don't provide you with the IP then goto the router's web interface and it should say there, even on the main page what the external IP is.

First site that comes up in Google is this: http://www.ip-adress.com/ - see if that works.

What do you mean that does not work? It does not give you one...? What are you trying to do? You should be able to go to showmyip.com also.

I reckon he's trying to connect to his PC via remote desktop or something and hasn't forwarded the required ports but might be something else?

I agree he is probably having a port forwarding issue. But I did not want to presume anything and let him give us more info on what he is trying to do that requires knowledge of his external IP.

Batch, if you do find your public IP address, please don't post it. Doing so will compromise your security. You can retrieve it by visiting known safe sites like www.apnic.net.

So it sounds like you've found the IP address you're looking for. In layman's terms, the router is the only device that uses the WAN (internet) IP address. Any device behind the router is given a 192.168.?.? number.

Your router is designed to block or ignore unwanted traffic by default, as such if you're trying to connect to your PC's, the router is more than likely assuming that traffic is a hacker trying to get in. What you need to do is configure the router and the target PC to accept inbound traffic.

On top of that, looking at our IP logs, you're using dynamic IP addressing, meaning that your internet address won't always be the same, hence it'll be very difficult to keep track of how to access your PC's from the internet. Because dynamic addresses keep changing, it's also harder for others to gain access to your PC's too - a way of improving security.

What are you trying to achieve by acccessing your PC via the internet? If you tell us this, we can help point you in the righ direction.

For a start, to access your PC's from the internet, the idea is to have a static IP address, meaning your internet address won't change. This also reduces your security and isn't advisable unless you have a genuine need to access your PC's externally.

Anyway, to do what you're asking:
    • you will need to set up VPN softwere on your PC
    • you will need to have a router capable of doing "VPN passthrough". What's the make and model of your router?
    • You'll need to give your PC a static LAN IP address so that you can port forward TCP/UDP ports according to the VPN protocol that you'll be using.
Have a read of this turtorial to get a better idea of what you're up against.

What are you trying to use? Remote Assistance or Remote Desktop?? With remote assistance you have to invite someone over MSN Messenger or VIA E-mail to assist you but with remote desktop the assist can type 'mstsc' into run and put in your IP address and use your login details to get access to the account..the port you need to forward to the PC that hosts the remote desktop session is port # 3389.

Ive done this before without setting up a VPN. All I did was forward the port, enable remote desktop and it worked. Some say you need IIS installed in the Windows Components for it to work but thats only if you use the web based client to access the host I think.

BTW, if you do have a dynamic IP address like most people on residential connections, download DynDNS Updater and sign up to http://www.dyndns.com/ and create an account and set it up in the DynDNS application, this will update your IP to a hostname of your chosing so instead of having to remember a new IP each time you get a new one, you can use the hostname instead, much easier IMO.
