Acceptable read and write performance for a terabyte drive, excellent random access speeds
Surely they jest about the access time, unless they're speaking in terms of 7200 rpm drives only.

Well yeah, unless you know of any 10,000 rpm drives that are 1 TB in size

Here is the HD Tune output from a single 500GB RE3 drive.

I went out and purchased a pair of wd 320aaks drives. They average about 150mb/sec which is better than what I had before. The only thing I see different in the test is the access time on these is slower. The access time and burst are not so important to me as the sustained transfer rate is. Not bad at 65 bucks a piece.

^^^can't really go wrong with those....IIRC they are a sinlge platter design and perform on par with the 640 gig wd640aaks that everyone seems to rave about.

But interesting indeed is the lower access time. Must be due to the dual processor on the RE3?

A question for RE3 owners: where was your drive manufactured? Was it Singapore/Malaysia or mainland China?

It seems to me the Caviar Black and RE3s are really the same drives.
The RE3s just have less platters.

Re: Western Digital Black Edition and RE3 RAID 0 benchies

I'm pretty sure they are all built on the new 320gig platter design.

The RE3's have TLER for RAID and that's about all the difference I can see.
