Re: Asus or Powercolor Radeon 4870's $255.00 AR at Newegg.

Man you gotta love price wars!!

I got my 4850 for a great price but I would have much rather splurged for one of the 4870's.

My 4850 gets so hot even at 40% fan that its caused the silly sticker on the heatsink to peal/curl off.

    Powercolor Radeon HD 4870 512MB w/ ATI remote control: $289.99 - $30 rebate - $20 coupon code VGA8820 = $239.99

    Powercolor Radeon HD 4850 512MB: $184.99 - $30 rebate - $15 coupon code VGA8815 = $139.99

Wow! Remember what we had to spend last year at this time to get a decent performing card from Nvidia?

I looked around and could not see anything about the Warranty on Powercolor video cards. So how are they and what is the length of the Warranty?

They offer a 2-year limited warranty (posts on other forums suggest a lifetime warranty on their products, but I can't find a direct link on their website validating this).

I'm happy to say I've never had a warranty issue with any video card I've ever owned. Maybe I just don't keep them long enough though.

Having said that, XFX is tops in handling warranty claims I've heard though. I remember reading a rep from their company state on this very forum a while back that they'd even take an overclocked card with an aftermarket cooler back without any trouble at all! How many other companies would do that?

As I recall, Sapphire used to make virtually all the ATI cards, including those that were ATI-Branded. Basically the separate companies added their own graphics to the cooler and box, and resold them. A very few of the high-end cards were on non-oem pcbs.
I wouldnt be surprised if this is still the case, but I do not know for sure.
At any rate, the quality of the cards will be virtually the same, the only real difference is the bundle, and the warranty.

This is why I'm puzzled by the comments (regarding Sapphire's cards) on the subject of reliability in places such as NewEgg and Rage3D. Like you, I recall a time when Sapphire was entrusted with producing reference cards for ATI for display and demonstration at trade shows; then again, I think all of this occurred before AMD entered the picture. I know the newer cards bear AMD's logo on the PCB, but I have no idea who manufactures them now. Is it still one supplier? Whatever the arrangement, I don't think it's as reassuring as when ATI sold their own cards (a selling point for me when I started working with PCs as a hobby).
