    NF7-S Help - SATA Drives......

Looking to re-install XP Pro after 5yrs of major use, thought good time to upgrade HD.

    Config was:

    IDE 40Gb (Xp Load)
    IDE 80Gb
    IDE w/Abit SATA plug-in 160Gb

Now, I bought a Samsung 750Gb SATA II, I pulled out the 2 IDE HD's and plugged in this new HD. Went into BIOS, SATA was already enabled, set it to boot from CDROM 1st, SATA 2nd....Saved.

    Current config:

Both using SATA controller. (only IDE DVD drives on IDE2 now)
    IDE w/Abit SATA plug-in 160Gb
SATA 750Gb (want to put XP on it)

Boot from XP Pro....get to HD partition screen, it sees no HD?

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Need it up fast, wife works from this PC!

    Thanks!

you need to load nvidia sata drivers from floppy (f6 when prompted) at the beginning of the windows install.

Re: NF7-S Help - SATA Drives......

Hmm...when I hit F6 it does nothing....yet when I hit F8 to accept the ULA it works....

    Logitech G7 USB Keyboard....any ideas?

OK, grabbed an old MS KB off the kids pc....F6 worked............and as I feared the FD was dead. Spent half an hour breaking into an old pos Dell to get it's FD. Still no go, it lights up but no read. Might be cable at this point. God I hate FD's! Off to Fry's tomorrow to see if I can get a new one and new cable.

Re: NF7-S Help - SATA Drives......

Ok, it gets worse. Seems the MB has a FD issue. I replaced the FD twice (both used and new units) and the cable twice...and it wont work. FD will light up when it attempts to read, but nothing is read. All pins look ok and straight. I setup FD in OS check in the Bios, and it fails everytime also.

So.....looks like I can put the old HD's back in there and reboot the original windows install. Maybe the large new HD will be seen since that install has the SATA drivers.

Question, not sure with Bios I have loaded, was there a newer one that allows the OS to recognice SATA drives without addtional drivers needed? Like most MB's these days?

Otherwise I'll need to move up a upgrade turntable which I really do not want to do yet...

    Thanks!

If you go back to the old drive setup, and boot up, can you read /write files onto the floppy ?

Re: NF7-S Help - SATA Drives......

Howdy again, good to see life in here....

Late last night I re-installed the master & slave IDE drives (have all 4 in there now) and it booted up Windows no problem. (the old original load) I did not try the Floppy again, but I will. The Bios though always reported a Floppy error (when that was turned on to check) so I don't have much hope in it.

Funny thing now, since the original load has SATA drives installed, it see's the new 750Gb drive, but my 160Gb WD is now missing! LOL! It was connected to the SATA controlled using the supplied by Abit IDE-SATA connector, and until this point has always worked great! (has almost 160gb of music, games and programs/drivers on it! Bummer!)

Since it sits in a Huge and heavy Desk with a tall back shelf unit, it's a real bear to pull out, un-hook, remove from the cabinet. It'll have to stay like this for over a week (next weekend is a huge car meet I go to) but the long term plan is that these guts with IDE drives goes to my grade school kids....and I'll put together something Dual/Quad core with these two SATA drives for the wife and I.
