How do you wipe a USB flash drive?

Can someone recommend a good freeware utility for wiping the contents of a USB flash drive?

I used the format option in Windows, but I read somewhere that data recovery specialists can still recover some of the information that was previously stored (with enough time and with the right tools).

I'll give SDelete a try though. Thx

This program doesn't mention working for Vista, is there a version that works for vista? I am about to sell this current laptop and want to make sure a cazy person doesn't mess with me.

haha thats funny that consumers think that only things that say they are compatible with vista will work with vista

you can really see the marketing at work

i even had my stepdad tell me that he would never consider linux as a legit peice of software until he saw compatible with linux on things

I mean thats sad that they have created that mentality in many individuals

i kinda agree with the linux thing, with windows it's a little different, it's more expected that stuff would just work with the newer version, but with linux, you kind of do want or need a reassurance in many cases.

Re: How do you wipe a USB flash drive?

well linux is weird i like that if it can be done then the community is up to making things work and i mean alot of stuff just cant be done(like fixing dam adobe flash or even getting micromedia to cooperate)

its just theres alot of people who own vista machines and are not well informed so they see 2 dvd drives 1 says vista compatible the other does not they will buy the one that does even though they both would have worked

though steve balmer himself said they made a few sacrifices in vista for compatiblity(really seems like they were payed to make stuff not work)

in vista its different they allways find a way if its possible hell i got my ATI Driverz to work so yeah they can do anything with enough time

the thing is that linux doesnt require very strong hardware unless your really into GIMP or you making a server

Re: How do you wipe a USB flash drive?

I've read that the only way to be absolutely sure that all contents are wiped from a hard drive or flash drive is to use the hammer method EB pictures above. Supposedly even the software designed to completely wipe all info from an hd leaves something behind.

Does anyone here know if there's any truth to this? Ever since I read that I've been leary of Ebaying my old drives.

For hard drives with magnetic platters (what most people have), this is an old wives' tale. The same applies for drilling holes through the platter. To be absolutely sure that all of the data is no longer accessible, the drive platters need to be totally disintegrated. Acid or incineration is the way to go.

An even better way might be to get some old IBM "Deskstar" stickers and attach them to any drive you never want to get any data off of again.
