noob help - 720p video file won't play properly!

I don't know what's the problem. I'm playing a 4gb 720p movie and it stops every few seconds and shows large squares then looks good for another few seconds, etc. It's wierd because i tested the game Stalker at full resolution (1440x900) and it worked perfect. VLC media player, Win XP. Here's my setup:

My CPU is at 44C and my GPU is 52C. Any help is much appreciated!

Does it play in Windows Media Player? VLC doesn't use hardware acceleration out of the box.

You might also want to try disabling Native Command Queuing on your SpinPoint hard drive/SATA controller.

Well its mkv so WMP doesnt have full support for the file type. Plays at 20fps and the picture falls behind the audio.
Is there a plugin or something to use hardware acceleration? <- in VLC
Also I have no idea what Native Command Queuing is or how to disable it. (see topic)

check if the file is corrupt, try zoom player. depending on the encode and how the datas transfered(im having issues with one of my external drives) youll bang your head against the wall a few times before you get it right. then you go into the drivers and such. another set of bangs. try playing a 40 gig file

potentially a codec issue and likely an unusuall encoding standard. I would have thought vlc would play tho.
Two options for codec setup and either should work...

1, get coreavc, ac3filter, Haali media splitter and install with default settings.
    or
2, get FFDshow and Media player classic, again install with defaults however DO read the ffdshow guide for setup tips. Optionally can install latest matroska/Haali media splitter which will disable the one built in mpc.

Both setups will allow wmp to play allmost all media aswell.

ps. coreavc is not free and have you run a complete memtest pass on your pc yet ?

Re: noob help - 720p video file won't play properly!

I googled around last night and ended up trying CCCP, FFDshow, Zoom Player, I don't even remember what else. They all did the same thing as windows media player, the sound fell behind the audio. But what's ironic is I found a post that said "just change .mkv to .avi" and it plays a near perfect 60fps in Cyberlink Powerdvd with the codecs that come with it! Thanks anyway.

edit- here's the post, just makes you go D'OH because this solution is so simple and obvious.

edit2- However I just found out I need the cyberlink H264 and VC1 codecs, i just uninstalled them and now it doesnt play

edit3- I also just uninstalled Haali media splitter which i didnt know i had on my computer, so i reinstalled it and THAT is what allowed this file to work! Without it I was getting an "invalid file" or some such error. Can someone explain this to me? Oh well i'm just happy it works.

I noticed this thread as it is a similar problem I am having playing >7GB mkv files. However this seems to only occur after the PC has been on for a while. My CPU temp is 70c, so do you think that I need to improve the cooling or is it something with software. I use vlc also. Being a software novice is there anything I can do to improve VLC if its that?
