All of my "cores" work noticeably better around 3.0ghz.
My E-8400 has been to 4.2ghz. A little better, but the most noticeable sweet spot, was around 2.7 to 3.0ghz. Hence, the E-8400's sweet spot, is stock. Sure, benchmarks get great scores cranked to the moon, but the benefit for daily usage and gaming, that high isn't there.

    precisely!

some people enjoy get every last little 3dmark point or going for those few extra MB/s for their memory bandwidth, i used to be a bit like that. it's just not worth it to me anymore.

i like to push my chip as far as i feel i can without stability and heat issues, but i don't dabble in single or double digit mhz increases, i go 100mhz at a time. 3.5 and 3.553 both look about the same to my eyes. i even like to keep the reference clock or fsb at nice easy whole numbers if at all possible. just makes working the math easier

i definitely still oc, video cards, cpu's whatever i can really, i just don't get down into the nitty gritty anymore.

video card right now is at stock though, not sure what's up with it, doesn't seem to hold an overclock anymore.

My e6750 is OCed to 3.60GHz and I found a huge difference in all sorts of performance measures, real and synthetic, between 3.6 and 3.0. That system just flies at 3.60GHz. But per my prior post, in daily business use, my laptop holds its own to the ds2r system with the e6750.

Brandito, if I had to guess, the ati 2600 mobile is probably closer to a 7600, though I'm not sure I'm running this laptop at full speed. It's set up to drop the cpu mult to a lower value (6 vs. 12) to conserve energy, and while it should be running at full speed when a game or any other demanding app is running, I'm not sure it always does that. I only got a score of 18K+ running 3DMark 2001se, and that seems very slow. I haven't installed any other games yet, though I may install a couple.

That said, this is still a very zippy system. I'm surprised how much I'm liking it. I bought it for use at work, but find myself using it a lot around the house, like right now sitting in the kitchen watching TV. BTW, this was the last of a sale item at BB, and they reduced the price even more since it was the display model in the store. But it still comes with a full warranty. Yeah, I feel like I got one helluva bargain. Even at full price, people thought it was quite the deal.

I have a mod friend that feels the same about his e6750.
Strangly, I am getting your 3d01 score, with 3d06. The clock speed there is 3.6, and about the fastest noticably. The biggest boost from stock, seems to be around 3.0.
3.6 is better, but not as vast of a difference from stock, to 3.0. Even if I set my ram to 1150mhz. CL5 All four systems. No punt intended, just pointing out mine.

Oh so true! ud, UB, and GlasMan know that for me the new stuff can be just a frustrating as "the old way". The only none bios oc'ing I ever really tried was with Chanintech's 7NIL1 and 7NIF2 mobos and 25s, 26s, & 2800s using telephone wire. So no, I don't miss the old days as my abilities and available time puts me right in the middle of the "everyday consumer".

Please note, that 3dmark 2001se score was in reference to my laptop, not my ds2r system with the e6750. On that system, with my 8800gt, my 3dmark2006 score is 12k or 13k. My 3dmark 2001se score is something like 36k on that system.

I have to agree that the glamor is gone. It's still fun to tweak chips, but it's somehow less fulfilling than it used to be. Of course, that could be the post-HS depression talking. Nothing has been quite the same since that ended years ago. The freshmen that were there my senior year have now graduated too.

I've got a Phenom 9850BE that will do 2.8GHz, but if I forget to apply to OC'd settings I don't hardly ever notice. Back in the day we were all more sensitive or something, because a 100MHz increase could actually be felt. Or perhaps everything just happens so quick anymore that it's hard to notice 0.95 seconds versus 1.00 seconds to do a task.

When I do get a successful OC I kinda sorta do the same thing. Find max "stable" and then back off a bit. Not sure why, but in my few experiences, I have found when I leave it at the "hairy edge" over a period of time it will become "unstable".

Yes, Poci, but at our advanced ages we hardly even buy ripe bananas, much less worry about a CPU lasting so long! Hey, I'm just kind of stoked to have heatspreaders on everything! Remember killing a chip trying to mount a monster copper sink on old Tbreds?
