Re: Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Upgrade

Honestly that's one thing that I have liked about Gentoo. There's no versions to upgrade to. Its a continuous feed of updates. So if something was to go down, its usually just one package. That's much more manageable then upgrading several hundred packages all at once.

BTW Wolfen, I just had to watch Kill Bill again the other night. Classic movie!

Yeah, but in the time it takes you to download, compile and install that OpenOffice point update you could have reinstalled a whole binary operating system and had time to take your girlfriend to the movies

why would you even try that? is it just me that is religious about clean installs? i don't care what OS i'm installing. upgrade is not an option if i back up files. of course things went wrong. that's why i don't do it.

i have a small computer repair business, and i was only "forced" into an upgrade 1 time. people need to be aware of the risks. then again i pride myself on being able to install the perfect os for the right hardware. and yes, sometimes it has been windows. i do whatever it takes to give someone a 100% working computer.( there's a reason i keep 30+ distros handy)+ every windows.
No it's not just you. I do that too. However I'm told that more testing goes into the upgrade path than does the clean install. Could that be BECAUSE it's more problematic?

Re: Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Upgrade

I did a upgrade to 8.10 from 8.04 and had 2 power buttons and it didn`t run as well as i expected. Fresh installed 8.10 and now have only one pb at rb corner.I`ve got all updates checked in versions-daily-proposed and even unsupported, been this way since release. The stress i`ve put it through would have crashed windows several times not to mention all the worms and such that seem to like windows.

I've got rid of Ubuntu for the moment to play with Mint 6.0, but plan to put 8.10 back later - I'll see if the same thing happens.

Re: Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Upgrade

I just upgraded to 8.04 and was not that happy with some of the gui tweaks (not sure if this is ubuntu or gnome driving the changes). Based on the comments above I think I'll pass on 8.10 and wait for the next incarnation. I don't really see a need to upgrade unless there is some specific feature I need (or I upgrade my hardware and need newer drivers). However I wanted the new version of firefox in 8.04.

I always worry about upgrades breaking my encrypted raid or similar via a change to how they are setup....

I'm from the same school as You. I believe that upgrading shouldn't be done because someone can, it should only be done because someone needs too.

8.04 is the first Ubuntu that has worked out really well for me. And since it's LTS I'll keep running it along with CentOS-5.

And yeah, I don't see any need to upgrade either as long as my PC holds up.

Re: Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Upgrade

I ended up having to do a fresh install to deal with some of the issues that simply couldn't be resolved with the upgrade. There are lots of Nvidia/kernel module/other things that were a non-issue on a fresh install, that didn't work right with the upgrade.

I never upgrade my Ubuntu installs..I always wipe the drive first then install. I have 8.10 on both my desktop and laptop...both going without a hitch. I was under the assumption that Atheros cards would be supported out of the box on 8.10, but I ended up having to install Madwifi on my laptop. Overall, Im pretty happy with it...no problems here.

I always upgrade since I (hope) custom (local) changes will be carried forward....
