Looks pretty nice. Any idea how the quality of the upconversion is?

From what I've read the mid-range Onkyo's are somewhat poor in that area. I mention Onkyo because I have lower end Onkyo 505 and had considered upgrading to something better with full HDMI video/audio switching support. I just got a blu ray player but my TV is only 720p so I'm lacking there as well.

The upconversion is reportedly very good on this unit. I have the same receiver as you, but it is called the 550, since came in a complete home theater package. I was looking for something that would give me the HD audio via HDMI, which as you know the 505/550 will not.
I ordered mine yesterday morning, it shipped in the afternoon. $394 total shipped.
I also like the built-in ipod port, much handier than having to use a dock.

Right the Onkyo 505 only switches video over HDMI. Right now with my blu-ray audio connected over coax digital I only get regular DD 5.1 and DTS although the 505 does a decent job of putting that to all 7 speakers using Dolby PLIIx which is primary listening mode I use for most sources.

Please let me know how you like it. I downloaded the users manual. Going to check it out when I get the chance.

i wonder how the OSD works, does it overlay the video on the screen, or does it black everything out? would is show volume changes and stuff like that on screen i wonder?

looks like a pretty good unit, but i'm happy with my sony dg820 right now, the 4 hdmi outputs sealed me on it, full upconversion to 1080p would be nice though, but all my devices are hdmi right now anyways. i wonder if it also upconverts the hdmi inputs? as in if it recieves 1080i or 720p does it scale it to 1080p? i mentions a scaler but i'm unsure.

i think it's also cool that it supports XM and Sirius, not that i have either, but many AVR's only support 1 or the other, maybe supporting both is a higher end features? i do have xm and sirius on directv though.

also what about auto speaker calibration? that's another nice convenience, of course breaking out the tape measure isn't so hard, but i'm all for letting the avr do it itself.

looks like a nice unit overall, if ms still had the 30% cashback it might be had even cheaper on ebay, that's how i got my dg820 so cheap.

Nope, you must have missed my post in Recent Purchases. I picked up a Magnavox Blu ray player at Walmart on Black Friday for $128. It lacks most of the features I wanted but was unwilling to pay for but it got me into blu ray

John, how about a mini review? I'd be especially interested in comparisons to the Onkyo receiver

I will do one this weekend. So far very impressed, and the sound quality far surpasses my old Onkyo. The MCACC auto calibration worked extremely well, I like it better than the Audessey that Onkyo and Denon use.

Far surpasses the Onkyo? Wow, that's impressive. I was just watching Dark Knight on Blu-ray recently and I was thinking how amazing the movie sounded on my 7.1 system driven by the Onkyo. And that was only the DD 5.1 audio track because my system currently doesn't support the HD audio formats.

I was checking what the total price would be for me and they charge tax in NY. It would be $425 total for me Newegg sells it for $429 delivered.
